This is Resident Appreciation Week 2026! Resident doctors are an essential part of the physician community in Sault Ste. Marie. They play a key role in providing high-quality care to our patients and represent the future of health care in our community.

Residency is a demanding and formative period of medical training, filled with learning, growth, and long hours as physicians transition from medical school to independent practice. Our residents are dedicated, compassionate professionals who consistently strive to deliver excellent patient care. We are grateful for their hard work and commitment, and we thank them for choosing to serve our community.

We would also like to recognize the invaluable support of our preceptors and program directors, whose mentorship, guidance, and leadership are critical to the training and success of our resident physicians.

Please join us in celebrating our resident doctors today and throughout their time in Sault Ste. Marie. We thank them for the difference they make every day.

Big smiles, bright stories, and a whole lot of heart 🚂📚

Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Jonathan DellaVedova and pediatric resident Dr. Julia MacDonald, Sault Area Hospital was awarded a grant from the Pediatric Alliance of Ontario to support the creation of a mobile book cart for our Pediatric Department. This initiative marks a focused step in enhancing the pediatric patient experience, recognizing that early childhood literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning.

After the grant was awarded, Soo Mill and Lumber went above and beyond—donating not only the materials, but also the construction and creation of our very own Choo Choo Train Library. This mobile library travels throughout the pediatric department, allowing inpatients to choose brand new books to enjoy during their hospital stay—and best of all, the books go home with them.

The grant funding will support the ongoing replenishment of books, ensuring children can continue to discover, imagine, and learn for years to come. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. DellaVedova, pediatric resident Dr. Julia MacDonald, the Pediatric Alliance of Ontario, and Soo Mill for helping turn hospital stays into story-filled journeys.

Please join us in welcoming Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Haitham Sakr, who recently began practicing at Sault Area Hospital (SAH).

An Interventional Cardiologist is a highly specialized physician who uses minimally invasive, catheter-based techniques to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease, structural heart conditions, and vascular disorders.

Originally from Egypt, Dr. Sakr is a permanent resident of Canada and holds an academic license to practice in Ontario. He completed his undergraduate and medical education in Egypt and brings more than 13 years of cardiology experience from Saudi Arabia, where he worked across public and private hospitals as well as academic institutions.

Reflecting on his first visit to SAH, Dr. Sakr shared, “I came to Sault Ste. Marie and Sault Area Hospital four months ago, and it immediately felt like I was with family. Everyone was welcoming and made me feel supported and at home.” He added, “The entire SAH team has been incredibly helpful and caring, making my relocation smooth and seamless.”

Dr. Sakr was also impressed by the hospital’s facilities, particularly the state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs. “I was amazed to learn that SAH has two cardiac cath labs. This hospital is doing great work, and I’m truly happy to be part of the team,” he said.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sakr has co-authored several research papers and has a strong interest in teaching. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, swimming, exercising, and playing tennis. He also looks forward to exploring the natural beauty of Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Sakr to SAH and to our community.

We are pleased to shine a spotlight on Erin Ratelle, Research Coordinator at Sault Area Hospital, who is the recipient of the 2026 Algoma Visionary Award – Health Sciences Industry Award, presented by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce and the STRIVE Young Professionals Group.

Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Erin’s journey took her to southern Ontario for post-secondary education before returning home in 2017 while completing her master’s degree. Later pursuing her PhD in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation at the University of Alberta. During the pandemic, Erin made the decision to return to Sault Ste. Marie—drawn back by Lake Superior’s shores, the outdoor lifestyle. Both Erin and her husband have strong ties within the local cycling community, which largely contributed to their decision to remain in the Sault.

Erin joined SAH in May 2025 and works jointly with the Sault Ste. Marie Academic Medical Association (SSM AMA) an organization dedicated to supporting NOSM University physicians with clinical teaching and research. In her role, Erin brings a strong commitment to collaboration, partnership, and re-imagining what healthcare research can look like in a northern community.

Two guiding principles shape Erin’s work: the importance of sharing research knowledge beyond academia, and rethinking who gets to participate in research and what counts as research in the first place. She actively challenges the traditional “ivory tower” model, advocating for research that is accessible, collaborative, and rooted in two-way learning between researchers and the community.

As Erin puts it, research doesn’t have to feel distant or exclusive—it can be driven by curiosity, creativity, and shared expertise, all with the goal of improving patient care.

As Research Coordinator, Erin plays a key role in supporting and advancing a wide range of collaborative research initiatives across Sault Area Hospital. Through the SAH Research Office, she works closely with physician principal investigators to help move projects from concept to implementation. Current initiatives include gamified infection prevention and control education with Dr. Castellani; exercise interventions for chemotherapy patients alongside Dr. Febbraro; research focused on detecting heart disease and blocked arteries with Dr. Abazid; testing new technologies to improve urology care with Dr. Noureldin; and piloting a virtual emergency department queue in collaboration with Dr. Smith.

While many of these initiatives are still in the early stages, it is exciting to see the breadth of work underway. What is especially notable is the wide scope of these projects across SAH, including oncology, cardiology, infectious diseases, urology, physician recruitment, and administrative improvements.

Erin learned of her nomination through an email, as nominators remain confidential. She is grateful that receiving this award has provided a platform to highlight the importance of healthcare research and its direct impact on patient care—even at the local level.

Congratulations, Erin!

February is Recreation Therapy Month.

At Sault Area Hospital (SAH), our Recreation Therapy Teams play an important role in supporting patients throughout their hospitalization. They provide care across Geriatric Services, our Rehabilitation Units, and Mental Health, promoting overall wellbeing through education, encouragement, and skill-building that supports physical, cognitive, affective, social, and spiritual development.

Working collaboratively with each patient’s care team, our Recreation Therapists use evidence-based treatment strategies and tailor recreational programs to support individualized treatment goals.

This month, we recognize and thank our Recreation Therapists and Recreation Therapy Assistants for the meaningful impact they make every day in helping patients heal, grow, and thrive.
