Did you know hearing loss is measured in degrees? Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔹 Slight (15-25 dB) – May miss soft sounds like whispers or leaves rustling.
🔹 Mild (26-40 dB) – Difficulty with quiet conversations or distant speech.
🔹 Moderate (41-55 dB) – Struggles with normal speech, especially in noise.
🔹 Moderate-Severe (56-70 dB) – Speech must be loud; group conversations are challenging.
🔹 Severe (71-90 dB) – May only hear very loud sounds or shouted speech.
🔹 Profound (90+ dB) – Little to no hearing without amplification.

Early detection matters! If you or a loved one relates to these levels, a hearing test can help. Learn more: helpmehear.ca

Just like any valuable investment, your hearing aids need regular care to perform their best. Proper maintenance not only extends their lifespan but also ensures optimal sound quality day after day. Let’s break down simple yet essential care habits every hearing aid user should know:

Daily Care Routine
🌙 Nightly:
• Gently wipe down your hearing aids with a soft, dry microfiber cloth
• Remove any visible earwax or debris from microphones and receivers
• Open the battery door overnight to prevent moisture buildup

Weekly Maintenance
🗓️ Every 5-7 Days:
• Replace wax guards/filters (type varies by model)
• Check tubing for moisture or discoloration (BTE models)
• Inspect microphone ports for blockages

Monthly Deep Cleaning
✨ Once a Month:
• Use the provided cleaning brush to remove stubborn debris
• Consider professional cleaning at your hearing specialists office

Smart Storage Solutions:
✨ Always Remember:
• Store in a certified drying kit or dehumidifier overnight

Small adjustments make a huge difference when speaking with someone with hearing loss. Here’s how to ensure clear communication:

🔹 Ensure that the hard-of-hearing person is facing you.
🔹 Men should keep facial hair trimmed above or below the lips to avoid interfering with lip movements.
🔹 Women should avoid bright or shiny lipstick, as it can make lip-reading more difficult.
🔹 Please keep your hands or objects away from your lips or face.
🔹 Do not shout! Speak clearly and slowly.
🔹 Do not repeat. Kindly rephrase your comments or questions.
🔹 Ensure the room is well-lit, as poor lighting makes lip-reading much harder.
🔹 Reduce background noise by moving to a quieter area when possible.

We hope these tips help! Simple, intentional adjustments in communication enable individuals with hearing loss to participate fully in the conversations around them.

We have created the Hear Now! Fund to help individuals and families whose low financial circumstances prevent them from purchasing hearing aids and also assists with FM systems for children under the age of 18 years.🦻 The fund started in 2003 and to date, we have used over $1,600,000.00 in funds and have helped 1,180 people purchase their hearing aids!

Since we do not rely on any government funding, every year, CHHA Sudbury raises money through our Ultimate Dream Home Campaign which allows us to bring funding programs such as the Hear Now! Fund to the hard of hearing community that is available to those who financially qualify across North Eastern Ontario.

Applications for the Hear Now! Fund are available at local Audiologists and Hearing Instrument Dispenser Clinics throughout North Eastern Ontario. Although the fund is replenished annually, funding is limited and dependent on our annual fundraising efforts.

Hear to listen. Hear to help.

SSNHL, often caused by viral infections, can occur suddenly and affect one or both ears. It's important to recognize the symptoms and seek immediate care.

Key signs include:
🔹 Rapid loss of hearing in one ear, typically within hours or days
🔹 Ringing or buzzing sounds (tinnitus)
🔹 Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds
🔹 Feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
🔹 Dizziness or imbalance

Time is critical! If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a hearing specialist as soon as possible. Early treatment greatly increases the chances of recovery.
