The holidays can be joyful, stressful, lonely or even all three at once. If this season feels heavy, you’re not doing anything wrong. A lot of people are carrying grief, pressure, financial stress, substance-use triggers or the quiet ache of not having anyone to turn to.

This year let’s try taking things gently. Set boundaries. Say no when you need to. Choose the moments that feel good and skip the ones that don’t. And if connection feels hard right now, even one small interaction (like a message, a walk, a community event, a support line) can help you feel less alone.

However this season looks for you, you deserve care, rest and support. Your local CMHA is here if you need us. 💚

Here are three red flags to look out for when using your phone:

1. You feel anxious or irritated in situations where you can’t check your phone.
2. Your sleep, study, or mood is impacted by your screen-time.

"Our priority is to keep people in our community safe and sheltered. In response to extreme winter weather conditions, overnight warming stations operate nightly from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am at the Low Barrier Men’s Shelter. This space provides a warm space for individuals who may otherwise be at risk outdoors. Our teams will make every reasonable effort to accommodate those seeking shelter during extreme weather, helping reduce the risk of cold-related emergencies and supporting the safety and well-being of our community. Behind every statistic is a neighbour.

As homelessness in Sault Ste. Marie has risen sharply in recent years, the need for real, coordinated solutions has never been greater.

The HART Hub was built to meet that need, offering one-door, wraparound care that meets people where they are and helps them build a safer, more stable life.

Thank you to Associate Minister Thanigasalam and Mayor Shoemaker and our amazing partners who joined us as we officially opened our doors.

“You can’t choose your emotions, but you can choose your response”

Regulation is about response, not suppression.

“You don’t get to choose your emotions, they just show up. But you do get to choose how you respond. That’s the power of emotional regulation. You can pause before reacting, take a breath, and make the choice that feels right for you.”

Human Rights Day reminds us that mental health, housing, dignity and safety are everyday essentials.

This year’s theme, “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” calls on us to look at how human rights shape daily life in ways we often overlook: having a safe place to live, being treated with dignity, accessing mental health care without barriers and being supported instead of judged.

For many people across Ontario, these rights are still out of reach. Long waitlists, rising housing costs, stigma around substance use and the challenges of navigating the mental health system all impact whether someone can live with safety and stability.

Human rights start with us. It’s in how we listen, how we treat people, how we educate ourselves, how we vote and how we support those whose rights are most at risk. When we protect dignity and create equitable access to care, we strengthen our entire community.

Mental health is a human right. Housing is a human right. Dignity is a human right.
