Are you all ready and excited for the solar eclipse taking place on April 8th, 2024? Remember safety first!

Viewing a solar eclipse without the proper eye protection can cause an overload of solar radiation to the retina which can cause irreversible damage to the vision.

Here are a few reminders so you can have a safe and enjoyable experience:

1. Use specially designed solar eclipse glasses that are approved by the American Astronomical Society and labelled with ISO 12312-2:2015 standard
2. Ordinary sunglasses or polarized sunglasses are not sufficient protection if you are looking directly at the sun or eclipse
3. Using a camera, or telescope without the proper filter can cause damage to the eyes and lenses

If you experience any vision changes after the eclipse, visit our optometrist promptly!

Digital screens have become an integral part of everyone’s lifestyle now! Below are a few tips to avoid digital eye strain and good habits to practice when using devices.

1️⃣Give your eyes a break! Practice the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

2️⃣Screen time can strain your eyes. Combat digital eye fatigue by adjusting screen brightness, taking breaks, and using blue light filters in glasses.

3️⃣Eyes feeling dry? Remember to blink regularly, especially when working on screens. Consider using artificial tears for relief as the blink rate decreases when using screens.

4️⃣Blue light from screens can disrupt your sleep. Try limiting screen time before bed and using 'night mode” for better circadian rhythms.

Look familiar?

This is one of the first test you’ll do in your eye exam by looking into a machine called an autorefractor.

The autorefractor shines light into the eye, and then measures its reflections from the back of the eye, called the retina. The patient is asked to look at this, popular hot air balloon image, that moves in and out of focus. As this occurs, it measures the approximate starting point of your prescription as well as the shape of the front curvature of the eye.
