I will always be proud to be a Canadian - It's pretty badass. What's not so badass is the history of colonization in which this country was formed from. When I say colonization what year comes to mind? Something like 1867 or earlier? That's a long time ago right? Sure, but also actions and decisions from this time are still greatly impacting Indigenous people.
I fully and completely acknowledge my white privilege, and will never truly understand an indigenous persons lived experience. I am however, doing my best to learn and adjust any harmful behaviour. That when my words or actions are corrected, I do not respond with anger, but with inquiry.
๐ This Canada Day, let's celebrate with reflection and solidarity. It's important to acknowledge that while we celebrate our nation's history and achievements, Canada is also built upon colonization. This has resulted in generational trauma, systemic racism, and ongoing marginalization of Indigenous peoples.
๐ฑ As we enjoy the festivities, let's also commit to raising awareness and advocating for meaningful change. Indigenous communities continue to face disproportionate challenges and are often overrepresented in social issues due to systemic inequalities.
๐ค Together, let's work towards a future where Indigenous voices are heard, their rights respected, and their contributions honored. Let's support initiatives that promote equality, justice, and reconciliation.
