As an IBCLC, I'm thrilled to be part of a dedicated community committed to supporting families. The joy of helping parents overcome challenges, witnessing baby milestones, and collaborating with fellow professionals makes being an IBCLC incredibly rewarding. Together, we're on a mission to nurture and celebrate the journey of parenthood, and supporting feeding goals whatever that might look like. Proudly embracing the bonds we strengthen and the smiles we share within the IBCLC community!

S E L F - C A R E

We all know self-care is important but do we prioritize it when we become parents? We are consumed by this life-altering event of birthing and caring for an infant. As beautiful as it all is, we can lose ourselves in the process.

So much of postpartum support is focused on the physical health of the mother and baby and researchers suggest that self-care, for both parents, should be brought into the postpartum care plan more prominently as it is shown to improve mental wellbeing. But it's not as simple as that....

Further research suggests that self-compassion must go hand in hand with self-care and low self-esteem and compassion can cancel out the benefits of self-care.

"Yet our research shows that self-care and self-compassion go ‘hand-in-hand’: parents are less likely to practise self-care if they are self-critical, and more likely to be self-critical if they don’t practise self-care. In fact, self criticism is one of the factors that can ‘cancel out’ some of the benefits of self-care." Avdagic et al. 2021.

One simple way to support our own self-compassion by having peer support and trusted people to listen to us without judgement or criticism. Maybe you'll find that in your community or maybe you'll find that friends and family. As healthcare providers we can prioritize communicating the importance of this for general parental wellbeing.

I throw myself into the ocean every Thursday as an act of self-care and my close friends help me to develop a better sense of self-compassion by listening to me and giving me a boost in a positive direction when I'm self-critical.

World Breastfeeding Week 2023

Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!

More than half a billion working women are not given essential maternity protections in national laws.

Just 20% of countries require employers to provide employees with paid breaks and facilities for breastfeeding or expressing milk.

Fewer than half of infants under 6 months of age are exclusively breastfed.

Unless one can teleport, moms can’t be in two places at once!

Women need paid time off for breastfeeding or expressing milk when they return to work after having a baby.
