An oldie! This is Andrea, our Education Coordinator, teaching a fermentation workshop on the back deck of Robin Wheeler's homestead in upper Roberts Creek 15 years ago. This is such a special picture, because Andrea has run off into the world and become an amazing teacher, an author (of fermentation books, no less), and mom, and returned to her roots here on the Sunshine Coast with the organization that Robin Wheeler founded.

Andrea's style is fun, relaxed, and hands-on. We've heard people say it's like hangin' out with a friend making weird and yummy things together. Her passion for how fermentation creates incredible flavour, carbonation, nutrition, and preserves food naturally... well, it's inspiring!

This weekend, come hang out with her so you can stop being weirded out about fermentation. It's MAGICAL, and together, you can learn, chat, taste, and take home your creation.

Since moving to the Sunshine Coast 3 years ago, almost to the day, my work has continued to be rich and varied. Today I got to teach a private class over Zoom for some newcomers to Canada. Our class focused on soups. We used veggie scraps to make a luxurious vegetable broth (left) as the base for the soups. And we used a roasting technique to get layered flavors with less chopping and stirring than with soup cooked in a pot. These soups start with veggies on a baking tray, a bit of salt and oil and roast until tender. Throw into a blender or use a blender stick, combining flavorful broth and whatever other liquids you like.
And voila- roasted beet, garlic and chard soup and Sunset soup ( combining any and all vegetables within the spectrum of a sunset with the addition of coconut milk). These soups are made using a technique, so they can be varied- which is much more versatile than having to dig up a recipe!

🌱🌼 Join us for our 30th Anniversary (28th Annual due to a couple years off with a bad cold) Seedy Saturday and seed exchange! 🌼🌱

It's that time of the year again when our community comes together to celebrate the beauty of gardening and the power and joy of sharing seeds. For nearly three decades, Seedy Saturday has been a cherished tradition, connecting gardeners old and new in a celebration of growth, biodiversity, and community.

At this year's event, you'll have the opportunity to participate in our beloved seed exchange, where you can trade your favourite seeds with fellow gardeners. It's a wonderful way to discover new varieties, preserve heirloom seeds, and connect with the rich history of our local gardening community.

In addition to the seed exchange, our event features a wide array of activities, including farm and artisan markets where you can find local goodies, seedlings, seeds, and growing mediums. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just starting out, there's something for everyone at Seedy Saturday.

So mark your calendars and join us as we continue the tradition of Seedy Saturday, honouring the past while embracing the future of gardening in our community. See you there! πŸŒ±πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

Ginger bug, a wild yeast culture made from grated ginger and sugar is the easiest culture to care for. It is ready to make soda straight out of the fridge almost a year since I used it last. And yes, this ginger bug is a perpetual starter, from my first batch of ginger beer back in 2009!

Just popping on here to give you guys a quick tour of what I'm up to in the kitchen this rainy Sunday. Mainly restocking the fermentation station, using what needs to get used up in my fridge. What are you prepping/ fermenting these days?

Lentil shepherd's pie with shiitake miso gravy. Made today in a private zoom cooking class. And now dinner is already done! (I'll brown up the potato topping in the oven/broiler when I reheat it)
