Miner's Lettuce (Montia perfoliata) is a fav spring green! Interestingly this lettuce used to be a popular salad vegetable of the west coast. It's high in Vitamin C and an invigorating spring tonic herb.
I also love chickweed, dandelion greens, cleavers, and nettles in my spring tonic mixes!

What are your favourite foraged spring greens?

It's time for west coast forest broccoli from our friend bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum).

The maple flowers are fresh and crunchy. The taste reminds me of a cross between broccoli and fresh shelled peas and I pretty much mostly add them to salads. However...I have been wanting to try them frittered so maybe this is the year for that!

Are you collecting these?

It was a privilege to spend my Saturday afternoon learning about WILD SODA from .

So cool to learn another enjoyable way to add plant power into my world!

I left feeling super inspired to add another element to my forages. I had no idea that yeast and bacteria inhabit the surfaces of many local plants, including flowers and berries.

We got to make our own wild soda and a ginger bug. My wild soda is Fir, Nettle, Cherry blossom, Raspberries, and Grape Hyacinth blossoms. I can't wait to try it out! And play with other combos ☺️

My newest creative project in its infancy stages. These are my first attempts to manifest the ideas swirling in my mind.
They did not turn out entirely how I want them, but that's okay. With each pour I am learning and getting closer to creating my vision. They do burn beautifully and am currently testing burn time.
I am fully confident that I will get these candles to the place I feel proud to sell them. My goal is before Mother's Day!
This path feels aligned and is being me joy!

Guttation!Β

We often see this phenomena on mushrooms but our plant friends do it too!

Special pores called hydrathodes is where excess water and nutrients are excreted creating these water beads on the tips of leaves.Β

This process often indicates wet soil and allows the plant to release internal pressure.Β

The liquid is the xylem flow of the plant (xylem transports water and nutrients from the soil to plant tips).Β

I love grabbing these beads with my fingertip and sipping on these magical droplets. πŸŒ±πŸ’¦

I am venturing into another newish territory this year with proper flower pressing. I know the pansies will press beautifully, however not sure about primroses πŸ€”

But experimenting is part of the fun because it almost always results in some kind of magical unexpected delight, and the process of it all helps me learn! πŸ˜†

Once the flowers are dried I will use them in some other crafty ideas floating around in my brain πŸ˜†...more details to come on that!

What is your favourite pressed flower?

I was recently gifted a bonsai starter kit, which is a pretty thoughtful gift to me!
I opened it up and got things started last night 😁😁😁
This will be my first time not only growing some of these plants (yay! New plant friends πŸŒΏπŸ’š!), but also with the art of bonsai.
I am quite excited to try my hand! To play, to grow and to learn. The plant world never stops fascinating me.

Have you tried bonsai?

Out foraging for cottonwood buds and finding the most beautiful scarf of turkey tails along for today's ride!

Turkey tails are easy to identify and abundant locally. I often use them in my broths.

Turkey tail medicine is invaluable. If you live in Japan and have cancer, you can get this mushroom for free! It is an extremely valuable mushroom for immune system modulation (a word that basically means supporting balance).

How lucky are we to have access to this mushroom just outside our door?
