Zhang Sanfeng once said:

“People always say their worldly affairs are not yet finished. But if worldly affairs are truly to be finished, they can only be finished by going beyond the world.”

This is not a rejection of life, nor a call to irresponsibility. It is a correction of a very common illusion.

People believe that one day, things will settle — that duties will be completed, circumstances will become favorable, and then, finally, there will be time to begin real cultivation.

But worldly affairs do not resolve themselves in this way. They do not come to a natural conclusion. If one waits for the perfect moment, one may wait an entire lifetime.

And yet, this teaching is not extreme.

If there are real obligations — to parents, to family, to life — these are not to be ignored. They are to be fulfilled with clarity and sincerity.

But even in the midst of these responsibilities, one must not neglect the beginning.

One may not yet be able to walk the entire path, but one must at least lay the foundation.

Why is this so important?

Because without foundation, life can end —and nothing real has been established.

But with foundation, even if the path is not yet complete, something essential has already been planted.

This is the balance: Do what life requires but do not postpone the root-work of life.

Because that root is not something that will one day become convenient — it must be entered now.

Why “refining the self” comes first

Everyone wants methods.
Few are willing to refine the one who uses them.

Without 煉己 (refining the self), all talk of medicine, lead, mercury, Water and Fire is unstable from the start.

Why?

Because the unrefined self is driven outward:
- seeking experiences,
- chasing sensations,
- grasping at results,
- easily excited,
- quick to conclude,
- and constantly mistaking the postcelestial for the precelestial.

Bring that into alchemy, and it will turn everything into illusion.

It will call heat “true Yang.”
It will call movement “circulation.”
It will call imagination “medicine.”

And it will be convinced something real is happening.

So refining the self means:
- cutting off this interference at the root,
reducing the dominance of the cognitive spirit,
- purifying intention,
- and stabilizing the inner field until it no longer chases or reacts.

Only then can anything genuine begin.

Without this, all methods become fuel for the very confusion one is trying to transcend.

This is why the masters were uncompromising: if 煉己 (refining the self) is not real, the rest is not practice — it is self-deception refined.

Lorsqu’on place Dieu à l’extérieur, comme quelque chose de séparé, cette séparation crée non seulement la croyance en quelque chose d’impersonnel pour l’individu, mais elle le rend aussi irresponsable.

Les deux créent un nombre infini de façons de se frustrer, de se mettre en colère, de blâmer, d’être triste, de se sentir diminué ou effrayé, etc., cherchant à nier ou à fuir cela. Toujours en quête ou en fuite de quelque chose d’extérieur et séparé de soi-même.

Si l’on place Dieu à l’intérieur, la seule chose en laquelle on doit croire, c’est en soi-même. La seule chose que l’on doit chercher, c’est de se connaître soi-même — Se connaître soi-même et vous connaîtrez Dieu ; chercher à connaître Dieu et vous vous connaîtrez.

Pour chercher, il faut observer ; pour connaître, il faut écouter. Le seul endroit où il faut chercher est à l’intérieur. Et quand vous verrez Dieu en vous, vous verrez Dieu en toutes choses à l’extérieur.

Ce n’est que dans le silence et l’immobilité que l’on laisse tomber tout ce qui n’est pas, jusqu’à ce que seul ce qui est demeure. Pour observer, il faut être immobile. Pour écouter, il faut être silencieux.

Plus vous pratiquez, plus vous vous rapprochez et plus vous comprendrez, jusqu’à atteindre un point où vous ne comprendrez plus. À ce moment, NE LÂCHEZ PAS, mais sachez plutôt que vous êtes proche. Quand vous arriverez, vous réaliserez que vous étiez déjà là depuis toujours, en tout temps, à chaque instant.

When one puts God outside, as something separate, this separation creates not only a belief in something that is impersonal to the individual, but also leaves them irresponsible.

Both create an infinite number of ways to get frustrated, angry, to blame, to be sad, to feel belittled or afraid, etc., seeking to deny or escape from them. Always seeking or running away from something outside and separate from one's self.

If one puts God within, the only thing one needs to believe in is one's self. The only thing one needs to seek is to know one's self — Know thyself and you will know God; seek to know God and you will know thyself.

To seek one must observe, to know one must listen. The only place one needs to look is within. And when you see God within, you will see God in all things without.

Only in quiet and stillness will one let fall all that isn't until only what is remains. To observe one must be still. To listen one must be quiet.

The more you practice, the closer you get and the more you understand, until you reach a point where you no longer understand. Then DO NOT give up, but instead know that you are near. When you arrive you will realize that you were already there all along and at all times, in every moment.
