Optometrist vs. Optician vs. Ophthalmologist – What’s the difference?

We get these questions all the time, so let’s break it down:

Optometrist – Your primary eye care provider. They perform eye exams, check your vision, diagnose and manage many eye conditions, and prescribe glasses, contact lenses, and certain medications.

Optician – The eyewear experts! Opticians help you choose frames and lenses and make sure your glasses fit comfortably and correctly, based on your prescription.

Ophthalmologist – A medical doctor who specializes in eye disease, surgery, and advanced medical treatment, including procedures like cataract or laser surgery. In Alberta, patients need a referral from their optometrist in order to be seen by an ophthalmologist.

Meet Dr. Vinh Tran!

Dr. Tran comes all the way from Massachusetts in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, later going on to graduate from the New England College of Optometry with his Optometric Degree.

He has a special interest in ocular disease and specialty contact lenses, but is always ready to help patients with all of their eye care needs!

In his free time he likes to keep up with a healthy and balanced lifestyle which includes martial arts, rock climbing and hiking!
