Today I set up a sensory friendly space for the seniors..
I stole an armchair from the hallway & a table..when no one was looking..
& created a cozy understimulating spot in the activity roomā¦
Currently, the activity room is not how Iād have it..and how Iād have it is..
an interchangeable room that can be used for activities but its default setting is a home like kitchen/living room vibe.
So, I stealth stole furniture, arranged it, made it cute, turned down lights, opened up all the blinds to reveal winter wonderland, offered up hot tea or coffee & cozy lap blankets & a chance to connect.
First, one of the men came in, he has dementia & wanders about plenty, I could tell this morning he was a little more antsy..
So I took him to our new old space & he settled in & loved it!
He chattered away & lit up, and his body was relaxed & cozy.
The next one to wander in was one of our more social ladies, she was sad though & lonely, Christmas can be lonely & painful & the older we get the more memories we have of Christmasās gone by..
She sipped a nice tea, cried a bit, I sat with her, we chatted about so much, had a few good hearty laughs!
She told me sheās always been the person who will find a spot by a river, down a bank so no one can find her..
ME TOO girl, me toooo.
Theyāre just older versions of us.
Everyond needs a sensory break, a room with tea & nice lighting & cozy warmth & an opportunity to connect.
She came in sad & left so much happier.
It was sweet to see how adjusting a room & the vibe can help people to change how they feel!
These are beautiful parts of the job ā¤ļø
Even if I get in s**t for stealing furniture & changing things. And I might. Lol.
