Team Benny

Team Benny Ben first conquered cancer at the age of 5, when he beat a Wilms Tumor in his left kidney.

After 5 and a half years cancer free, the cancer has returned to his right lung and his battle begins again.

I've been thinking a lot about the irony about statistics in Childhood Cancer

Did you know that the odds of a child getting cancer are just 0.38%? The type of tumor Ben had had two types, favourable and unfavourable, Ben’s Wilms tumor turned out to be one of the 5% that are categorized as unfavorable.

When we first learned Ben was diagnosed, we were so encouraged by the success rates. He initially had an 80% survival rate, which later jumped to 90% after the first year. Doctors confidently told us to breathe easy at the 5-year mark, Ben was “cured.”

But here we are again, standing in front of this challenging path. With relapses, the conversations about statistics don't come up, they won't say, because they aren't good. The chance of relapse after almost six years cancer free is 4.4%.

Of course, I understand the reality of numbers—they reflect medical probabilities based on countless cases. But it's in the statistics that Ben truly lives, in those smallest of percentages. And if he’s proved anything, it’s that he thrives in the unexpected, he's out of the ordinary.

I firmly believe that this time, Ben will again find himself in that small percentage of fighters who defy the odds.

I mean look at this kid! Only 3 days after 8 days of chemo and he's golfing 18 holes of golf. Hanging with the guys this weekend at the lake for a boys golf weekend. 🥰 The nurses were surprised with how well Ben did these past couple weeks.

Rocking out the start to the last three days of chemo this cycle. Not impressed he had to come from the lake on the holiday but did so willingly and with a smile.

Done chemo for the week! Ben is feeling better today, a bit more chipper than yesterday. He had a visit from our friend Neil Brown who came to invite Benny to join him in a golf tournament in June. He sweetened the ask with a brand new putter. No pressure Ben, but I think he's looking for a ringer. Then we popped in to see our friend Theo who is inpatient this weekend. Excited for Theo and his family that this is his second last chemo. 🙏 That is the end of this sh*tty road for them. And good luck to the Toronto Blue Jays tonight! Ben said he feels this is the night Vladdy knocks one out of the park. Insisted on wearing his Blue Jays hat for good luck.

There’s a reason our team continues to fight so hard to bring Proton Beam Therapy to Canada. 🩶

This powerful article from the Ben Stelter School Fundraiser team explains why proton therapy matters so deeply for children and families facing cancer — especially pediatric patients where precision treatment can make a life-changing difference.

Canada remains the only G7 country without access to Proton Therapy, forcing families to travel far from home during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Through the Ben Stelter Centre for Proton Therapy and Neurosciences, we are working to change that.

We are incredibly proud of the students behind the Ben Stelter School Fundraiser for using their voices to educate, advocate, and inspire others. Seeing young people lead conversations like this gives us so much hope for the future.

Take a few minutes to read and share this important article: https://news.benstelterschoolfundraiser.com/2026/05/13/importance-of-proton-beam-therapy/

Together, we are building something that will change lives for generations to come. 🩶
