Oscar’s Update 🐾❤️

At Medix, we talk a lot about care, compassion, and being there when it matters most—and that doesn’t stop when the uniform comes off. Especially when it comes to our family!

Today, Oscar underwent major surgery to remove multiple cancerous masses.

He made it through, but not without challenges. Oscar is sedation-resistant, so he had to be placed under deep anesthesia, which caused some respiratory complications during the procedure. It was a tough road, but he pulled through like the fighter he’s always been.

Thanks to his strength (and a midnight snack at 4 a.m.), he was cleared to come home today, and Lydia picked up our brave little man with all the love in the world.

I was lucky enough to visit Oscar in ICU just after finishing a shift late last night, spending time with him in recovery, curled up and offering comfort after a hard fight.

Oscar’s still in pain, and he's a little (a lot) stitched up—and bald—but he’s surrounded by the same support and dedication we give to every one of our family.

We’re waiting on his biopsy results to see if further treatment like chemo will be needed. For now, we’re just grateful he's home and recovering.

Stay strong, Oscar. You’re a part of our Medix family—and we love you, fur (lack there of) and all. ❤️🐾

🐾 Oscar Update – Surgery Day 🐾

This morning, we took one last photo of our beloved Medix mascot, Oscar, before he headed into surgery. He’s undergoing a major procedure to remove a cancerous mass, along with four additional growths that appeared recently.

While his surgery was delayed until later in the afternoon, we’re grateful to hear that he remained calm and in good spirits throughout the day. The veterinary team is optimistic about the outcome, though they’ve reminded us that procedures of this depth do carry risks and potential complications.

We’re keeping hopeful hearts and steady hands as we wait. Please join us in sending good thoughts for a smooth surgery and a strong recovery. We’re all hoping Oscar comes through this feeling better, stronger, and ready to keep being the good boy we all love. 💙🐶

A Difficult Update About Our Beloved Oscar 🐾

It’s been a tough season for our team, and today brings another heavy moment.

Oscar — our company’s therapy dog, mascot, and cherished family member — has been diagnosed with cancer. We learned about this a few weeks ago but took time to process the news and speak with specialists to understand the best path forward.

We’re heartbroken, but we’re rallying. Oscar is an irreplaceable part of the Medix EMS family — not just for our staff, but for every client, community member, and responder he’s comforted over the years. We’re moving forward with treatment, hopeful that we caught this in time, and doing everything possible to ensure his journey is filled with love, comfort, and expert care.

This past Monday, Oscar underwent diagnostic imaging and aspiration as part of his staging. The results confirmed one mast cell tumor and five additional suspicious lipomas. It’s a tough reality to face — but it’s not as grim as we initially feared. The early consensus from the oncology team is that Oscar has a strong chance at successful surgical removal, followed by a potential round of chemotherapy if necessary.

However, there is one concern: the lymph node closest to the mast cell tumor is inflamed. This poses a serious consideration for the surgical team. Full lab panels have been submitted, and we’re expecting results later this week. If everything comes back clear, Oscar will head into surgery next week.

And on a personal note — I know some people might not understand, but Oscar isn’t just a dog to me. He’s been my best friend since he was a pup. He’s been with me through the hardest days and has kept this team grounded more times than I can count. He’s family. He is one of my kids. And this… this hurts more than words can say.

We’re ready to fight — with everything we’ve got.

Let’s kick cancer’s ass. 💪🐾

Provincial Measles Alert

There are reportedly 12 confirmed active cases of Measles infections in the province. Along with cases on Vancouver Island after exposures occoured on BC Ferries vessels on the 20th as well as the Hot and Cold Cafe in Victoria on the same day.

That makes a total of 49 cases confirmed this year, a difference from 32 that was initially reported on June 19th.

While the number of active cases may be small, the Province is warning the public that the exposure risk is higher and does not match the small number of active cases as there may be several people whom have unconfirmed cases of the infection.

The Province and the BCCDC is urging those whom think they have been exposed, immuocompromised, unvaccinated or unsure of vaccination status, has a child under 1 who has been exposed, to contact their local public health unit immediately.

Exposure can take up to 3 weeks to develop symptoms.

Symptoms are:
- High fever,
- Persistent dry cough
- Runny nose and Nasal congestion
- Red watery eyes
- Distinctive characteristic rash
- Kopliks Spots (mouth)
- Severe fatigue and weakness
- Loss of appetite and eating difficulties

While mild symptoms can be managed from home, it is crucial that you contact your Healthcare provider if your fever is above 101 deg F, rash at the same time or difficulties breathing and dehydration.

Measles is extremely infectious and easily transmitted. Be sure to self isolate, wear a mask and contact your healthcare unit prior to going to ensure they are prepared for your arrival.

An LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) is a mechanical pump implanted in the chest to help the heart pump blood to the body. It is used for patients with severe heart failure, supporting the left ventricle, and improving circulation.

Here is a great reference for anyone who may come across an individual with an LVAD. This is a very good example of why it is SO important that we always perform a Rapid Body Survey (RBS) for any patient that is found unconscious.
