** Sprains **

A sprain is an injury involving a ligament. A ligament is the fibrous tissue that connects the bones of a joint, providing stability around the joint. These tissues are structural and non-contractile, therefore, when stressed they may stretch or tear. We grade a sprain from Grade 1 to 3, with 3 involving a complete tear or rupture of the tissue.

Sprains are often seen when a joint moves beyond its available range of motion, like a hyperextension or twist mechanism.

If you suspect you’ve had a sprain, proper rehabilitation is important to regain joint stability and prevent repeated injury.

If you have a vehicle that is insured through ICBC this is worth watching! Not only does it impact physiotherapists, but potentially any driver involved in a motor vehicle incident seeking treatment.

The issues arose due to ICBC's Health Care Services Terms, which allow qualifying health care services to bill ICBC directly for services provided to individuals.

Poor sleep is associated with higher pain sensitivity, elevated inflammation, and higher stress response within the body. But achieving restful sleep when our body is uncomfortable can feel like an impossible task. Here are some strategies that are worth trying to maximize your sleep quality:

- Avoid caffeine in the second half of the day
- Exercise and get outside during the day
- Avoid fluid and food intake 2-3 hours before bed
- Put away screens 1 hour before bed and opt for light reading, meditation, breath work, or stretching
- Take (pain) medication as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist
- Ensure your bedroom is dark and the temperature is not too high
- Use a pillow that works for you (sometimes the splurge $ is worth it)
- Follow a night time routine (heating pad, application of topicals, sound machine, etc)
- Maintain a consistent bed time
