Island Health has recently informed the public of a rabies positive kitten found in rural Chemainus, which has sparked a lot of conversations with our clients about vaccinating their pets. Link to article below.
It is expected that the kitten was infected by a bat which is consistent with the source of nearly all rabies cases in B.C. in the last 25 years. Rabies is a serious but preventable disease and early intervention is key. Keeping pets up to date with rabies vaccination is important both to prevent infection with rabies, and to improve assessment of pets that demonstrate behaviors that could be compatible with rabies.
Some clients worry about vaccinating their pets but the risk of a vaccine reaction is very low and is far outweighed by the protection vaccines offer against potentially deadly illnesses.
