Happy spring to every one. I know it has been quite some time since the last post on this page but with the challenges that our Slave Lake Hospital has had with staff shortages and administration changes in the past several months, our Chemo For Slave Lake initiative had stalled.
Both myself and Harry Bartlett recently meet with our new MLA Scott Sinclair. Scott is very, very interested and excited about providing chemo treatments once again here in Slave Lake. Yes, it may appear that we are starting all over again but this time we have our MLA's whole hearted support.
There is more work that needs to be done in providing Mr. Sinclair with the necessary ammunition to give to the Minister of Health when he meets with them in the future.
I respectfully ask that you reply to this post with any reasons why you may feel that Slave Lake should be allowed this well needed service. Thank you for your continued support of this page and this so worthy of a cause. Also your stories and comments are always welcome. Thanks again and keep watching this page for more information as we move along.

Funding research in cancer prevention and care
September 02, 2022
New funding will support and encourage cancer prevention, screening and care initiatives to improve health outcomes for Albertans.

The Cancer Research for Screening and Prevention (CRSP) grant program will help build capacity and excellence in cancer research, collaboration and innovation. Three-year grants of up to $1 million each will fund research, education and initiatives that promote cancer prevention, early detection and screening, and improve the journey of care for cancer patients and their families.

Eligible applicants, including Alberta-based post-secondary institutes, non-profit organizations, Métis and First Nation communities and organizations, are encouraged to apply.

“Cancer is something that will touch all Albertans in some way during their lifetime. Expanding eligible applicants for this funding will encourage partnerships to improve cancer outcomes for all Albertans. Community partnerships can greatly assist in developing local, culturally safe and socially appropriate solutions for rural, underserved, Indigenous and vulnerable populations. To win the fight against cancer and its devastating impacts, we need collaboration, innovation and excellence from all Albertans.”

Jason Copping, Minister of Health
To leverage the overall impact of cancer research funding, the CRSP grant can build on an existing project or a portion of a project already underway. Evaluation of all applications will include a clear path forward for widespread implementation, adding value to the health-care system and providing tangible solutions, support and hope for every Albertan facing cancer.

Quick facts
$5.3 million has been allotted to cancer research for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
The CRSP program will provide up to $4 million in funding in 2022.

Well, now that the holidays are done and the Visa bills received, things are again moving forward for Chemo For Slave Lake. Although at our last meeting, AHS expressed some concerns as to the number of people being treated in our area may does not quite meet the standards required to maintain a treatment Center here in Slave Lake. How ever, they did suggest that we put together a comprehensive business plan that may well justify opening a satellite treatment Center here at home. After speaking with the hospital administrators our group has been tasked with examining our current financials and what annual operating costs will be incurred. We will keep you posted on our progress. Things may be moving at a snails pace but they are still moving. Please keep your posts of experiences, suggestions and comments going. Thanks.

This is the day we have been waiting for!

Slave Lake Chemo Steering Committee and AHS
When Fri Oct 22, 2021 10am – 11:30am (MDT)

It’s very crucial that if any one has any questions for AHS to please pass them on to Doug Babiy, who will pass them on to Cindy Harmata. This will eliminate more delays of them having to research the answers then get back to us. This it it. Good luck to us all.

Please circulate as appropriate. For those who will join in person, Cindy Harmata has reserved the Lakeland Centre conference room (305A/B), the third floor of the building in Slave Lake. There is a skype invitation is for those who are not able to join in person. Please advise if you need the Skype invitation, and please contact Doug Babiy if you have any questions.

Although there has not much been going on publicly with Chemo For Slave Lake, lots has been going on behind the scenes. We finally have a meeting date set for October 22nd with Alberta Health Services. All due to the perseverance of Cindy Harmata. Many thanks to her for her efforts. It was a little challenging to set this meeting up due to the number of AHS people who are need to be involved. Everyone from administration to Pharamcy to logistics. This is the next huge step that we must take to finally persuade AHS to give their approval in finally getting this extremely important service here in Slave Lake. Your support is needed now more then every. Please, keep up with posting your comments, questions and stories. The more information that we can pass on to AHS at this meeting, the better proof of the urgency and extreme need Slave Lake has for Chemo For Slave Lake.
