Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Opticians. Whatβs the difference? Who should you see? π€ π©π»ββοΈπ©πΎββοΈπ¨π½ββοΈβ
β
πΈ Optometrists provide optometric eye exams and assess, measure and diagnose disorders and diseases within the human eye. Recognize and co-manage related systemic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes. They also fit and dispense eyewear, from glasses to contact lenses. Most can prescribe medications depending on the province. They can remove foreign bodies from the eye, provide a referral to secondary specialists like an Ophthalmologist, and so much more. β
β
πΈ Ophthalmologists are surgeons and specialists in eye disease. They usually require a referral from an Optometrist to obtain an appointment for a medical or surgical treatment like Cataract surgery.β
β
πΈ Opticians are licensed to provide glasses and may dispense contact lenses and other optical aids. They do not assess, diagnose or treat eye conditions, nor can they check or write prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses.β
