When we seek the approval of others, it often comes at the cost of betraying ourselves.

A warrior does not look to the faces in the crowd to determine their course of action. They look within. It is their values, their goals, and their integrity that guide them forward.

Sometimes the scoffing, the doubt, or the disapproval of the masses is not a sign you are lost, it may be proof you are exactly where you should be.

Many of the most worthy paths a warrior can take are the ones that are uncrowded, uncertain, and difficult. And that is precisely why they are worth walking.

As we welcome in this new season, let it be a reminder: Sow the seeds you wish to reap in eight months.

The work you put in today, won’t show up tomorrow. Or next week. Give it time.

Nurture it.
Water it.
Be consistent.

Soon enough, you’ll see what took root. During winter you’ll be supplied with new habits, new strength, new ways of showing up in the world. When the cold of winter creeps in, you’ll only reap exactly what you sewed.

Today I’m thinking about the women who shape my world the most, my wife and my daughters.

The strength they carry.
The care they give.
The way they hold people together in quiet ways that often go unnoticed.

They remind me every day that real strength isn’t loud. It’s steady. It’s compassionate. It shows up again and again for the people you love.

The world is better because of women like them. Grateful for the light they bring to my life.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Your nervous system isn’t weak. It’s untrained.

Cortisol isn’t the villain. Chronic, aimless stress is. The body was built to experience spikes in stress, but in controlled doses, with clear beginnings and clear endings. When you choose discomfort: in cold water, in a sauna, during a fast, on a trail, your brain registers something different. It doesn’t read threat. It reads exposure with control. It learns, I can enter stress and I can exit it.

That distinction matters.

Deliberate stress builds capacity. It strengthens your stress response instead of frying it. It teaches the nervous system to mobilize on command, and more importantly, to stand down when the demand is over. Heat. Cold. Hunger. Effort. These are not punishments. Avoiding discomfort makes people fragile. Rehearsing it makes them resilient.

You don’t build strength by eliminating stress. You build it by applying the right kind, on purpose, repeatedly, and with recovery. You don’t need less stress. You need better stress.

The team at Hughes Counselling is excited to share our new logo. This is a visual embodiment of who we are and what we stand for.

Interwoven within the design is a wolf, symbolizing our approach to therapy: loyal, resilient, and deeply attuned to emotion. Wolves are intuitive creatures, strongly connected to their pack, and we honour that same spirit in our work: protective, wise, and unafraid of vulnerability.

Rising above are mountain peaks, representing growth, perspective, and the inner work that therapy invites. Mountains take time, effort, and resilience to climb, and we see our role as a guide: supporting clients at every step of the journey.

Cradling it all is bamboo, a symbol of flexibility, grounding, and calm presence. Bamboo bends but does not break; it remains deeply rooted, steady through storms, and continues to grow in every season. This reflects the heart of Hughes Counselling: strength through softness, growth through support, and resilience through care.

Heal Today. Grow Stronger Tomorrow.

Dave Morrow; Canadian veteran, author, and host of The Hard To Kill Podcast, reminds us that you’re not broken, just under-recovered. His philosophy is simple but powerful: a strong mind in a strong body. Your mindset and your fitness are the two things you truly control, and reclaiming them changes everything.

We’re proud to recommend his book to our Hughes Counselling community. Link in bio to explore.
