Try this safe & gentle technique to protect your core and incision:
✔️ Raise the head of the bed
✔️ Roll to your side using the railing & heel of bent leg
✔️ Push up with your arms as you drop your legs (like a seesaw!)
✔️ Move to the edge of the bed
✔️ Exhale & stand tall 💨💪

You hear about rehab for MSK injuries & Birth is an MSK injury 🤯

Whether you have had a vaginal birth with a tear/episiotomy or a c-section, which is a major abdominal surgery - you need rehab.

You might think 🤔 that everything is okay & you don’t need a check-up with a PelvicPT post birth but would you say the same thing if you tore a ligament in your ankle or lost 25% of the strength of your quad (you lose that in your pelvic floor just from carrying the baby).

I had a patient recently that came in for a check up post 4th birth (she had heard about it from friends & decided why not). Well, she is so glad she came as we found a prolapse (very common with 1 in 2 women) however it then explained the unusual heaviness she felt in her pelvis when she went back to exercise too 🔜.

So we are now working on progressing & finding the bodies limit to push to the line, but not break through it.

Fear ⬆️ Pain & Slows Down Birth

If your a first time mom, had complications with a precious pregnancy or have pregnant friends you may hear things such as:

“I’m excited to meet my baby, but I feel really nervous about giving birth!”

“I feel really scared when I think about what’s going to happen- or what might happen.”

“I just hope that I can deal with the pain and avoid anything going wrong!”

All of these statements have an underlining theme of 😨 fear.

Some fear is normal due to transformative & unpredictable nature of birth.

However, the more fear a person has about labour, the higher the likelihood of complications & a painful experience - called the fear-tension-pain cycle.

It works like this: When you’re feeling fearful, anxious, or unsafe, you’re activating your body’s fight or flight mode (sympathetic nervous system) and your bloodstream fills with adrenalin. Your body reroutes blood and oxygen away from vital organs (including your uterus), and sends it towards the extremities to help you escape your threat (this is flight mode).

The fight part of this response causes you to tense up your entire body in anticipation of pain or threat. Your muscles hold tension, your shoulders rise, your fists and jaw clench, and there’s not a single relaxed muscle in your body. You’re ready to fight your threat (and in this scenario, your “threat” is the pain of labour).

However, when your muscles are tense, everything hurts much, much more- including your contractions.

This process then decreases oxytocin - often slowing down or lengthening labour.

When you are calm & relaxed you active your rest & digest system (parasympathic nervous) system which sends blood to smooth muscles such as your uterus and cervix & increases productions of oxytocin - thereby progressing labour and decreasing pain.

How to help with fear in labour?

With education, having a great birth team (more on that soon) & a supportive community.

It’s such an excepted honour to be nominated for the Content Creator of the Year award by peers & colleagues.

This year has really been a turning point for me:

1. pushing past the fear & imposter syndrome of doing it on my own

2. left my previous long standing employement that was not serving my purpose or utilizing my skills to my best ability

3. using social media/ actually showing my face (if you didn’t know before this is didn’t have IG or even use Facebook 😝)

4. realizing I really enjoy the IG thing & helping reach women all around the world 🌎 & educating them about PelvicPT

Here are the rules for Treatment ❤️

Your opinion/voice matters in my treatment room (or virtual treatment room), so I ask that you be an active participant.

Many patients are often confused when I ask them “what do you need from me today?”

I may have a plan in my mind, but something new or vital cna change since our last check in, don’t be afraid to tell me.

This allows me to better customize our treatment plan for you and your needs.

For example, I was working with a patient on leaking with jumping, but when I asked how her squats/little jumps were going she stated that she couldn’t do them because her knees hurt so much.

So a change of plan was in order, I treated her knees (which she thought she shouldn’t mention as she didn’t think I treated that), she walked out feeling much better & was able to continue her treatment for the issues she originally came in for.

🌟So Remember 🌟

1. All questions are welcome & there are no stupid questions

2. Nothing is off limits - no subject is taboo

3. Let’s do our best as a team - meaning both parties do their part of the treatment plan

4. Pain is NOT part of your treatment or assessment- so let me know if I don’t realize (which I should, but a reminder just in case) & don’t just bear through it

5. Talk to me, your therapist, if you have a problem - even if that means the treatment is not working because I am not a mind reader we can always change the direction/perspective

September is NICU Awareness Month & Sept 26 is NICU Remembrance Day.

We are so grateful that our baby was able to come home, but not all parents are so lucky.

So in honour of these little ones & all the help we received & NICU we give a BIG THANK YOU to everyone on our journey.

Having a premmie & being in NICU is a scary, but the staff made it a welcoming & safe experience.

In particular, there was an amazing NICU nurse (I believe his name was Tom - but that experience feels like a blur) he was out saviour. He taught us how to hold, swaddle and change our baby. He offered to do kangaroo 🦘 care & gave advise to pump after a visit to start milk production.

Without him we would have been lost and afraid of holding our own baby 👶

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts ♥️ for all that you do.
