If trying for a baby is in your plans soon, you'll want to give yourself a min of 3 months before you start trying for preconception care.
Here are some things to help get you started:
1. Prenatal. There are so many out there these days but picking a GOOD one is so important. Specifically you want one w/ the folic acid in it's active form - listed as methylfolate or 5-MTHF on the label. See post on this back in my feed for more info on what makes a prenatal a quality one.
2. Track your cycle. Knowing your cycle is key for not just determining your ovulatory patterns but the specifics of your flow & associated symptoms throughout your cycle can give some insight into how your hormones are looking. BBT & OPKs can help.
3. Bloodwork. Having some baseline labs of your nutrients (esp vitamin D, B12, iron), thyroid, & reproductive hormones (among others) is recommended before you start trying so that it can be addressed early on. Some of these can impact your ability to conceive but also maintain a pregnancy so it’s importance should not be overlooked.
4. Eat nutrient dense foods & limit intake of caffeine & alcohol. In general a Mediterranean style of eating is a good choice for many, as it brings a good variety & is packed full of antioxidant rich fruits/veggies, fiber, protein, & healthy fats.
5. Minimize exposure to EDCs (endocrine disrupting chemicals). Many chemicals in our direct environment (think air, water, food, products, & materials) can wreak havoc on our hormones & affect egg/sperm quality. While it's not feasible to eliminate them all, paying att'n to what is lurking in your cosmetics, personal care & cleaning products is a good place to start. Consider shopping organic for meat & produce listed on the "Dirty Dozen" list.
6. Mitochondrial health. It takes ~3 months for an egg to mature before ovulation. Our mitochondria (the energy producing structures in our cells) reduce in # and are easily damaged w/ age & in response to oxidative stress during this time. Since it takes a lot of energy to develop an egg, optimal mitochondrial function is a must to support the quality. Supplementing w/ antioxidants can help!
