We’re about halfway through January, and for many people, Dry January hasn’t gone exactly as planned.
If you found yourself reaching for a drink along the way, you’re not alone and it doesn’t mean you failed.
Alcohol use isn’t about willpower.
In recovery and in the 12 Steps, we recognize that relying on willpower isn’t enough. Healing is rooted in connection to a power greater than ourselves, whether that’s a Higher Power, community and support groups, cultural teachings, or shared strength.
Evidence-based research shows that alcohol use is closely tied to stress, trauma, habit loops, and nervous system regulation. For many people, alcohol becomes a way to cope long before it becomes a problem.
If alcohol has been detrimental to any area of your life, such as your health, relationships, work, mental wellbeing, or sense of self, abstinence may not be about restriction. It may be about protection.
Recovery doesn’t ask for perfection. It asks for honesty, support, and a willingness to take things one day at a time.
When stopping feels hard, that’s not a personal failure. It’s information.
At Red Road Recovery, we believe healing happens through evidence-based therapy, 12-Step principles, cultural connection, and community, supporting the whole person, mind, body, and spirit.
If Dry January didn’t go as planned, you don’t have to face it alone.
