This is an exciting time for health care in Muskoka! Our team has been advocating for an MRI in Muskoka for many years. Once construction of the MRI Suite in Huntsville is completed, and commissioning of the new machine and staff training is achieved, we look forward to receiving our first patients this summer!
Leading up to this exciting opening of the MRI service in Muskoka, every Monday we are bringing you a frequently asked question to our deepen understanding of this powerful new imaging tool!
Q: What are the benefits of an MRI scan, and how is it different from a CT scan or other imaging modalities?
A: MRI can produce two- or three-dimensional detailed images of soft tissue, including the brain, nerves, vessels, organs, cartilage, tendons, muscles and ligaments, compared to a CT Scan that is ideal for bones, lungs, trauma, internal bleeding, etc. Unlike a CT scanner which uses radiation, MRI does not use radiation. Since MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves, it’s safer for repeated use, especially in children and individuals who need multiple scans. Similarly, x-ray, ultrasound and other imaging modalities all have their place in helping to diagnose medical conditions. Your healthcare provider may use one or more imaging modalities that are optimal for investigating your health.
