Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services Vision Statement:
Maamwesying kina gweya n'minobimaadizing
Working as one for the wellbeing of all

Our vision aptly describes how Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services Board of Directors oversee both N'Mninoeyaa Aboriginal Health Access Centre (AHAC) and the Baawaating Family Health Team to deliver quality primary and therpeutic health care to all individuals in its member communities as well as the urban aboriginal population residing in the City of Sault Ste Marie. Our health board consists of three (3) First Nation Chief and Council members who also serve as the Executive Committee for Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council. We provide services on an outreach and collaborative basis to:
Seven (7) First Nation communities along the North Shore
Four (4) First Nation communities in the Chapleau/Wawa area
One (1) Indian Friendship Centre (SSM)
through our N'Mninoeyaa AHAC. We also manage Baawaating Family Health Team, which provides services primarily to our off reserve population residing in Sault Ste Marie, as well as to any non-Aboriginal local residents.

Yesterday, January 15, 2026, we were honoured to come together for a grand opening gathering to mark an important milestone for the Maamwesying Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub.

This gathering was a time to reflect on the vision for the HART Hub, to honour the relationships that have brought this work forward, and to acknowledge the collective effort underway to build an Indigenous-led, culturally grounded approach to care and recovery for our communities.

“This HART Hub is designed as an Indigenous-led, holistic model of care—where traditional Anishinaabe knowledge stands alongside health care, mental health supports, housing, and social services, in a way that respects people and meets them where they are.” Peyton Pitawanakwat-Ominika, Chairperson, Maamwesying NSCHS Board of Directors

We extend a sincere miigwetch to the Maamwesying & HART Hub staff, the Executive Committe of our Board of Directors, Constituency Assistant Maria Trudeau from the Office of Bill Rosenberg-MPP, and of course the community membersand Elders who joined us, shared ceremony, and helped mark this meaningful moment in a good way.

As planning and implementation continue, we remain committed to working together to ensure the HART Hub reflects the needs and strengths of the people it is intended to serve.

Kweok (women within the Anishnaabe culture) are a vessel for spirit to enter the human life form. Women are our life givers, and they carry the weight of having this organ and its parts, as well as the risk of developing cervical cancer. Therefore, it’s important for women to honour their bodies, care for them, and seek a healthcare and healing when needed.
January is Cervical Cancer month. It is observed each January to promote awareness and prevention. Cervical cancer is one of the only cancers that can be eliminated. It’s almost entirely preventable through HPV vaccination and effective cervical cancer screening. What do you know about the causes, risk factors, screening and prevention?
