Here are my thoughts.

Dietitians aren’t the food police—we’re your partners in health, working in many different areas to support your unique needs!

From managing medical conditions to helping you reach your wellness goals, our work goes far beyond meal plans and the food guide.

And guess what?

Dietitians are amazing humans too! Navigating the world of nutrition right alongside you! 🍎✨

Ever wonder what it takes to become a Registered Dietitian? 🤔 Let’s break it down!

1️⃣ University Education: It all starts with a rigorous undergraduate degree in nutrition and food science. 📚 This includes courses in biochemistry, food sciences, clinical nutrition, and more!

2️⃣ Dietetic Internship: Next, aspiring dietitians complete a competitive, hands-on internship where they gain practical experience in clinical, community, and food service settings. 🏥🍎

3️⃣ Registration Exam: To become a registered dietitian, passing the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam is a must. 🎯 This comprehensive exam tests the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe and effective nutrition care.

4️⃣ Continuing Competence & Registration: Registration with the College of Dietitians of Alberta is just the beginning! 📋 Dietitians are committed to ongoing learning and must complete continuing education to stay up-to-date and provide the best care for their clients.

5️⃣ Dietitian vs. Nutritionist: Remember, not all nutrition professionals are dietitians! Registered Dietitians are regulated health professionals with extensive education and training, while the term “nutritionist” can vary widely in qualifications. 🥼💡

Becoming a dietitian takes dedication, but it’s all worth it to make a positive impact on people’s health and lives! 💪✨

Happy Senior’s Month!

At this time of year, I am reminded as to why I started Aging Well Nutrition Services.

For those who’ve been with me on this incredible journey, you might recognize parts of this story. But if you’re new to my page, I’d like to share my “why.”

During my time in school, my grandfather’s health began to decline. His frequent hospital visits, difficulty swallowing, and poor appetite were heart-wrenching to witness. What struck me most was that no one recognized his risk of malnutrition during his hospital stays, and he never had a Dietitian follow up with him in the community. As a student of nutrition, I wanted to do something, anything, to help. I’d visit him on weekends, brainstorming ideas to help him eat—Ensure, even baby foods and smoothies to aid with his swallowing difficulties.

Despite my best efforts, my grandfather passed away, alone in the hospital, after our goodbyes, and we were told to go home for the night.

This memory has never left me. It’s the driving force behind my passion for working with older adults and their caregivers. I want everyone in these situations to feel heard, to know someone is fighting for them, and to be a catalyst for change in our healthcare system.

My original plan was to spend 3-5 years in each sector of continuing care, beginning with long-term care. Fast forward 8 years, and I was still in long-term care. I was about to return to work after my maternity leave.

At that moment, I thought of my grandfather, as well as my two living grandmothers, and all the seniors that I have had the pleasure of caring for over my time in long term care. My desire to make the world a better place was stronger than ever, but I realized that to create the change I envisioned, I had to take the leap and start my own business.

That’s how Aging Well Nutrition Services was born. My mission is pretty big: to touch as many lives as I can, to be a voice for our older adult population, to support those who care for them, and to provide guidance and recognition as we navigate the golden years.

Thank you for letting me share my story with you. Together, we can make a difference. 🌟

How’s Your 💩?

This is a question dietitians ask every single client! Your 💩 tells us so much about what you are and are not eating and drinking.

I ask my clients about how often they are going to the bathroom, what the shape and colour are like, as well as texture and everything in between! No need to be shy, I’ve heard it all!

Are you having trouble or have you had a change in your 💩? Reach out today for personalized guidance and support to improve your health and wellbeing today.

🌟 Managing Diabetes in Golden Years 🌟 Tips from Your Geriatric Dietitian

1️⃣A Balanced Diet is Key! Focus on fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, dairy/plant-based alternatives, whole grains, and lean meats/plant-based protein foods. A balanced diet helps control blood sugar levels and maintain energy throughout the day.

2️⃣Stay Hydrated! Older adults feel less thirsty, which can lead to dehydration. Aim for at least 6-8 glasses of fluids (water, milk, anything you enjoy drinking) daily to aid kidney function and blood sugar control.

3️⃣Get Regular Exercise! Incorporate gentle activities like walking, swimming, or yoga. Aiming for even 10-20 minutes of walking after meals can greatly improve blood sugar levels.

4️⃣Make Sure You Get Routine Check-ups! Regular visits to your healthcare provider are crucial. Here you can discuss any changes in your health and have your adjust medications as needed.
