While summertime is the season for peak activity, the height of Yang, we must also ensure we carve out time for mindfulness and rest.

Michael Tierra, herbalist, likens our body to a car's engine, and we must take care of both things properly in order for them to run well.

"So just as when we take a vehicle and run it on fast high gear using poor quality fuel, oil, lack of lubrication and cooling fluid, [...], they will get hot, wear out and eventually break down altogether causing the engine to shut down.

Similarly, when we run the human body on poor quality food, air and water, and/or subject it to overwork and various forms of physical and emotional stress, the body will get hot, wear out and eventually break down."

So, just like we need to schedule regular maintenance for our vehicles, so too do we need to schedule regular maintenance for our bodies. Acupuncture and other body work, time for self-care, rest, and play are vital to balance the Heat element of the summer and prevent burn-out.

What will you do today to take care of your most important vehicle? πŸš—

Summer is a time of abundant fresh fruits and vegetables, and eating seasonally is a central tenet of TCM.

Our diet in the summer should be lighter, consisting largely of fresh fruits and vegetables.

πŸ₯—πŸ₯’πŸ₯•πŸ“πŸ‰πŸπŸ…

Fresh fruit has the strongest yin energy, which helps to balance the intense yang and fire energies of summer. Reach for watermelons, strawberries, tomatoes and pears.

Fresh vegetables, especially cooling foods like cucumber, spinach and lettuce, celery, radish and carrots, are a great choice. Light cooking methods like steaming preserve the cooling nature of these foods.

Herbs are great additions to your summer meals - basil, cilantro, parsley and mint are particularly good choices for this fiery season.

What is your favourite summer meal? Which fruits and vegetables do you reach for during the summer? Let us know in the comments!

The sound that belongs to the heart according to TCM is laughter and the emotion is joy. 😍

It’s no wonder that joy feels best when shared. πŸ’žπŸ€—πŸ’ž

It’s also no wonder that researchers have found that the quality of family relationships and social connection is a strong factor in heart disease prevention.

So, as summer provides the warm inviting opportunities to get together, treasure your family and friends (and pets!) and find ways to connect, laugh and share your joy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is all about balance, and so all organ systems have a paired organ. The Heart organ system is paired with the Small Intestine. ☯

The small intestine plays both a physical and a mental role. The mental role of the small intestine is to separate the clear thoughts from the turbid ones, just as physically, it separates valuable nutrients for the body to use from waste products it must eliminate.

This is just one way the small intestine is connected to the heart in TCM. The heart houses the mind and is in charge of all of our mental health. Clear judgment depends on the ability of the small intestine to separate the pure from the impure. When there is dysfunction in the small intestine, then there may also be dysfunction in the mind ❀🧠

While Western medicine doesn't necessarily recognize a connection between the Heart and the Small Intestine, we often talk about it - think about the sayings that we use such as "trust your gut", a "gut instinct", or "go with your gut feeling".

This is just one example of how TCM practitioners look at the body as a whole, instead of focusing on symptoms, in designing a treatment plan that will work best for each individual! If you'd like more information about this, talk to your practitioner!

Summer is officially here (even if it doesn't feel like it yet!) In TCM terms, this means we are moving into the season of peak Yang energy; associated with the Heart, the element of Fire, the color Red, the emotion of Joy and the sound of Laughter. πŸ”₯β€οΈπŸ˜…

To harness the power of this season, here are a few tips:

😎 Wake up earlier in the morning and rest at midday if possible

😎 Pursue activities that bring you joy

😎 Balance the Fire element by seeking water - swimming, cool baths and showers

😎 Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially red foods

😎 Don't forget to play!

😎 Book yourself in for some body-balancing acupuncture

The transition between seasons is a particularly beneficial time to receive acupuncture! We can help make sure you're in balance as we move from spring into the summer season.

Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches seasonal allergies in a much different way than Western medicine.

We don't seek to simply treat the symptoms – since TCM looks at the body as a whole, we can get down to the root of the problem and correct it at its source.

Allergy symptoms are a sign that one or more organ systems in the body are out of balance, and acupuncture helps to rebalance the body's systems, which can help reduce the occurrence of allergy symptoms βš–οΈ Book yourself a tune-up today if you're struggling with seasonal allergies!

Another way to help fight allergies is with the foods you eat.

Researchers are discovering more and more about how Omega 3 fatty acids work in the body, and we know that they provide protection against inflammatory diseases like asthma and allergies.

Good sources of Omega 3's include:

β€’ Fish, especially cold-water fatty fish like salmon and tuna
β€’ Nuts and seeds, especially flax seeds and flaxseed oil, chia seeds and walnuts

Try adding some extra Omega 3's into your diet for overall good health, and especially if you're suffering from seasonal allergies!

Stinging Nettle is a plant that can be used in many ways to help treat seasonal allergies.

It's been traditionally used around the world to treat muscle and joint pain, osteoarthritis, and eczema, and there is some evidence to suggest that it can help those suffering from seasonal allergies as well.

Researchers are still learning about the compounds in this plant, but they believe that it can reduce the amount of inflammatory chemicals in the body, and mediate allergic reactions.

Stinging nettle can be dried and prepared as a tea, taken in capsules, or made into a tincture and used in compresses and creams.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you would like more information on using nettle for allergies!

Our Story

At Spruce Grove Acupuncture we practice a holistic approach to healing, with an emphasis on compassion for all of our patients. We always look at the entire body and how all systems are functioning together. For example if you come in with shoulder pain we are still going to talk to you about your energy, sleep, diet, lifestyle and any other symptoms you have going on. We get an overall picture of what is happening so that we can guide you in achieving optimal health. It is our goal to educate you on how to become and stay healthy. We also have a full TCM herbal dispensary where we custom make herbal formulas based on your diagnosis. The herbs are a very large part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and when used with acupuncture the results are amazing! Just like you take your car in for a tune up regularly, your body also needs regular tune ups to stay balanced. We are always happy to answer any questions you have and we will take the time to listen to your story.
