Meet Carmen, a passionate nurse based in beautiful Squamish, BC! In 2023, she took her expertise to the next level by completing a specialized course in advanced foot care at Vancouver Community College, and she’s been helping people put their best foot forward ever since. Foot care is a specialized medical service provided by nurses trained in this field. It primarily involves toenail trimming, reduction of thickened nails, care for corns and calluses, and addressing various other foot conditions. This service is a game-changer for those who can’t manage their own foot care due to challenges like difficult-to-trim nails, hardened skin, limited mobility, poor flexibility, vision impairment, or reduced dexterity. Carmen offers in-home appointments, bringing her expert care right to your doorstep. As well as clinic appointments in downtown Squamish (Sea to Sky Sports Physio). Foot care services include:
• Foot care assessment
• Reduction of thick and/or fungal nails
• Toenail cutting and filing

Looking for Ski & Snowboard Gear Donations!

A social development program for the N’Quatqua First Nation (by Darcy and Anderson Lake) is in need of ski and snowboard gear donations!

Every winter, they run a program where folks—from kids as young as 7 to adults up to 65—head to Whistler on Saturdays to enjoy skiing and snowboarding. All the gear used is donated, and they could really use a restock for next season.

If you have any gear you’re no longer using, let me know! I’m happy to pick it up, or you can drop it off at my place. I’ll make sure it gets to the community.

What they’re looking for (any sizes):

-Skis & snowboards

-Ski/snowboard boots

-Poles

-Outerwear/appeal, Jackets, Pants, Gloves

-Googles

I’ve stepped things up with a new hydraulic treatment chair—great for your feet and a total back-saver for me!
Due to a back injury, I’m not currently offering home visits, but I’m still happily seeing clients here at the clinic.
Thanks for sticking with me through this little bump in the road—one step at a time! 🦶

Let’s Talk Urea – Your Feet Will Thank You!
🦶✨

Got dry, cracked heels or stubborn calluses?
Urea is your new best friend.

What is it?
🧪 Urea is something your skin naturally makes to stay soft and hydrated. In foot creams, it’s the MVP—especially in higher amounts.

Why’s it so good?
💧 Hydrates dry, flaky skin
🪨 Breaks down thick calluses so your feet feel smoother

How do you use it?
🧴 Slather it on clean, dry feet once or twice a day—especially on rough spots like heels and balls of your feet.
With regular use, you’ll feel the difference!

My go-to creams:
✔️ Gehwol Callus Cream
✔️ Gehwol Med Salve for Cracked Skin
I use them all the time in my foot care practice—they work wonders!

Where to buy:
🛒 Shop online from Gehwol Canada:
https://gehwolcanada.com/geshopcrackeddry/

Or check your local pharmacy or foot clinic (📞 call ahead to see if they stock it!).

Want to nerd out with me?
📹 Here’s a great video from a UK foot care nurse I really admire. She explains it all so well:

A Powerful Letter on Living with Dementia & the Strength of Community

In this heartfelt letter, Glenn and Carol Bayliss share their journey with frontotemporal Alzheimer’s disease, opening up about the challenges they’ve faced and the incredible support they’ve received through the Whistler Mature Action Community’s “Making Connections” program.

This initiative provides fitness sessions, music therapy, and social interactions, creating a space where both patients and caregivers feel supported and connected.

Their story is a powerful reminder of how community programs can enhance quality of life and reduce social isolation for those affected by dementia.

Read their letter here:

'I am so thankful for their wonderful care and support that has allowed me to keep what little sanity I have'

What is a Partial Nail Avulsion?

Struggling with painful ingrown toenails? A Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) may be the solution!

A PNA is a minor procedure where part of the toenail is removed to relieve pain and prevent infection. A chemical (usually phenol) is often applied to stop regrowth, providing a long-term or permanent fix.

Who Can Benefit?

✔️ Chronic or painful ingrown toenails
✔️ Redness, swelling, or infection around the nail
✔️ Those looking for a long-term solution

Who Can Perform a PNA?

Only a qualified doctor or podiatrist can perform this procedure. While I cannot provide it, I encourage you to consult your doctor if you’re interested or have questions.

How Long Does It Last?

With phenol, the procedure is typically permanent. Without it, the nail may regrow within months.

Why Use Phenol?

✔️ Prevents regrowth – Destroys the nail matrix to stop recurrence
✔️ Higher success rate – Lower chance of the ingrown nail returning
✔️ Minimally invasive – No stitches, with healing in a few weeks

When Might Phenol Not Be Used?
• If a temporary solution is preferred, some podiatrists skip phenol so the nail can regrow.
• If the patient has certain health conditions (e.g., diabetes, poor circulation), phenol may be avoided to aid healing.

You might be dealing with Stucco Keratosis—a common, harmless skin condition that appears as small, rough, white or gray bumps, usually on the feet, lower legs, and arms. It’s more common in older adults and is often linked to dry skin.

How to Treat & Remove Stucco Keratosis:
✅ Moisturize: Use thick creams with urea or lactic acid to soften the spots.
✅ Exfoliate: Gently remove buildup with a pumice stone or scrub.
✅ Dermatologist/Foot care Treatments: Cryotherapy (freezing) or curettage (scraping) can eliminate stubborn bumps.
✅ Topical Retinoids: Help speed up skin cell turnover.

Since Stucco Keratosis is harmless, treatment is optional unless it causes discomfort or cosmetic concerns. Keep your skin hydrated and exfoliated to manage it effectively!

What Are Corns on Your Feet? 🌽🦶

Corns are thickened areas of skin caused by repeated pressure or friction, often from tight shoes or high-impact activities. They can be painful and make walking uncomfortable.

There are three types:

🌽Hard corns – small, firm, with a dense core, usually on the tops of toes.
🌽Soft corns – more flexible, found between toes.
🌽Seed corns – tiny, often on the soles, sometimes painful.

Corns vs. Calluses:
Corns are smaller, deeper, and have a hard center, often painful when pressed. Calluses are larger, form on pressure spots like heels and palms, and are rarely painful.

Struggling with corns? I can safely remove them and help you walk pain-free. Book your appointment today!
