Amy Carr-Hilton, RMT, Chronic Pain Recovery Coach

Amy Carr-Hilton, RMT, Chronic Pain Recovery Coach Registered massage therapist, student of counselling psychology, chronic pain recovery coach, and creator of 12 week Empowered Pain Mastery program.

Amy is an RMT with over 10 years experience who brings a neuroscience and trauma informed approach to her manual treatments. Her fascination with health led her to initially pursue training in fitness, functional movement and exercise psychology, becoming a personal trainer in 2000, then pursuing yoga therapy where she worked with neurodivergent clients, and clients living with chronic pain. In 2011 she became a registered massage therapist, graduating with honours from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy. Since becoming an RMT she has focused on sport massage as a sport massage certification candidate, working with adult and youth athletes through training and injury recovery, perinatal care including an outreach for high risk pregnancies at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto, and chronic pain with a focus on bringing more empowered self-care along with manual therapy for chronic pain. Her own experience with recovering from chronic pain and other chronic neuroplastic symptoms helps her bring compassion and experience to the process of regulation of the nervous system and calming pain signals during massage therapy treatments. Whether you’re seeing Amy during recovery from surgery or injury, support in mobility or strength training, looking for comfort during pregnancy, or seeking out a more active, empowered approach to working through chronic pain, Amy will have a treatment plan complete with self-care so you can continue the process after your treatments. She understands how important it is for you to feel comfortable and capable in your body so that you can enjoy being active in the things that bring you joy, and she’s dedicated her continuing education over the years to helping you reach those goals using evidence-based therapy. When she’s not working with clients, you can find her mountain biking, hiking, paddle boarding, at the gym, singing, playing cello, reading a book, or just generally enjoying life.

Do Any of You Do This Too?
Everyone has their own weird little routines and habits that they do throughout the day that keep them grounded and I am no different…

To keep myself centred in my experiences I converted a tiny 4x4x4 storage closet in my house to a meditation retreat room.

It's actually totally empty except for a cushion, blanket and a battery candle. There are NO distractions in there, so I have to be with my thoughts, emotions and physical sensations.

I know it might sound weird but this space I have set up with nothing in it helps me to really sit with what my experience is in each moment.

What weird habit do you have that keeps you happy and healthy? Please share so I know I'm not the only one!

What The REAL Problem Is
When I am working with clients I find there is often a disconnect between what they THINK the cause of their pain is and what the real issue is.

Many of these ideas stem from old ideas and ways of doing things in conventional medicine, or just a simple misunderstanding about how the brain responds to the environment or situations it's been exposed to.

Some of these ideas are just ineffective, while others can actually make the symptoms WORSE so it's important to understand what is true and what is not.

Here are the five most common misconceptions I hear regularly from people who are trying to manage their pain.

1:
It's not a physical or structural problem. It's a physiological problem resulting from a sensitized central nervous system.

2:
Strength training and stretching isn't the full answer. It's the ability to tap into trusting your physical safety with movement at a primitive brain level.

3:
It's not the pain you need to get rid of. It's about reassuring your primitive brain of your safety so your pain protective system is no longer needed.

4:
It's not about shrinking your life to avoid pain. It's about learning how to embrace who you are and all of your thoughts and emotions.

5:
It's not about the amount of time or effort you spend doing the work. It's about how connected you are to your emotional experience.

Which one of these ideas have you previously believed to be true?

These Symptoms Are Not Random…
This list of symptoms probably look like they're all random, but in fact they're all connected and often all point to the same root problem.

When you are dealing with chronic pain you can end up with different flash points where seemingly unrelated symptoms present themselves leading to confusion as you and your healthcare team start trying to "patch" all these different issues.

The problem is, unless you are addressing the root cause of all these different symptoms, you will spend your whole life "patching" different and new symptoms that will continue to crop up.

If you have these (and other) symptoms and feel like you are just running from one symptom to another you need to stop the patching and start reversing the main issue which is a dysregulated protective system leading to central sensitization.

Do you have these symptoms? Do you have other symptoms that I didn't mention?

If you want a method that heals at the root of your symptoms, get my mini workshop: https://www.amycarrhilton.courses/care-elements

Being Your Own Chronic Pain Recovery Detective
There are so many caring and conscientious people dealing with chronic pain. Many who are acting as their own chronic pain recovery detectives, so I wanted to give you some red flags to watch out for if you are working through this problem on your own - without professional help.

Red flag 1 - If despite all your effort, you still aren't seeing an improvement in your pain you may need a more targeted solution and should reach out for help. Taking charge of your own wellbeing is an amazing thing to do, but if you're not seeing improvement, having a second, alternative opinion to look at your situation could be very valuable.

Red flag 2 - Some people in their quest for a solution end up in a place where fixing the problem becomes the only thing they do or think about. If you find that you are completely obsessed with watching when and where your pain crops up, you need someone to help bring clarity and focus to your quest. Remember: hypervigilance and preoccupation are detrimental to your recovery.

Red flag 3 - If you start seeing an increase in the frequency, intensity or locations of your pain, that could mean that what you are doing to help with the initial symptoms are causing more dysregulation. Getting properly evaluated by your physician to rule-out conditions requiring medical intervention is a logical step to take, but once that's done you need to look higher up the chain than the body parts where your symptoms are showing up.

If you are experiencing any of these red flags or just want to know you're following a method that works, join us in Empowered Pain Mastery.

This is my 12 week program that heals at the root and untangles the confusion along the way. https://www.amycarrhilton.courses/empowered-pain-mastery

I LOVE voice to text
When you are unable to sit, or stand, or be in any one position for too long you need all the extra help you can get when you are trying to do some journaling as part of the self-healing work.

That is why I LOVE using the dictation function on my mac.

It allows me to type without sitting at my laptop, which allows me to stick with this top down technique I have so much resistance to. If you don't have a mac there's also a voice typing tool in google docs that helped me back in my windows days!

Do you have any practical tools you've found helpful - not to avoid triggers, but to do the active healing you know you need to do?

Please share, it might help someone else!

Here's the Honest Truth…
When you are dealing with chronic pain, and all the limitations it places on your life, it can end up affecting your self-confidence and your ability to trust that your life will ever be normal again.

The way persisting pain, despite your best efforts to get rid of it, plays with your mind and how you see yourself and the world is often the hardest part to overcome…

It's this inner dialogue and the stories you tell yourself about your body and yourself that can end up being worse than the actual problem.

This is why it is so important to surround yourself with a community of people who are going through the same struggles…

NOT so that you can all get together and talk about how bad it is… but so that you can give each other support and have a beacon for what is actually true when your inner dialogue starts to take you in the wrong direction.

So… if you are struggling with negativity this week here is an affirmation I would like you to try repeating throughout the day to help reset your mind.

"Each day I trust my body and myself a little more"

We dive into how our thoughts, beliefs and language affect our healing in Empowered Pain Mastery.

My Story

I have a huge passion for educating people in preventative and rehabilitative self-care. My fascination with the body and mind and all that can be accomplished when injury free has led me to pursue training in fitness and exercise psychology, yoga therapy, massage therapy, and sports massage therapy. I understand how important it is for you to feel comfortable and capable in your body so that you can enjoy being active in the things that bring you joy, and I’m dedicated to helping you reach those goals using evidence-based therapy, including muscle energy, myofascial, deep tissue and neuromuscular techniques. On my time off you’ll see me on the trails in Squamish actively enjoying my other passions; trail running, hiking, and especially mountain biking, you might also catch me singing or playing my cello somewhere around town.
