Who could use some good news? Or dare I say, an awesome made in Squamish success story?
Having been in 5 local elections, sitting on council for 2 terms and being on Squamish Speaks from day 1 there are VERY few issues I've seen Squamish unanimous on.
Until 10 years ago today when I challanged federal laws to open the 1st cannabis store to provide safe access to the people of Squamish. When the RCMP were told to shut us down by the conservative federal government, a unanimous Mayor & Council stood with our MLA and a unified community and said safe access to cannabis is important! The scarriness and significance of these early days can not be over stated.
Two years later Squamish gave us a business licence for a still federally illigal store. Four years later Squamish was the 1st in BC to say YES to recreational cannabis stores when they approved the 1st application in the province allowing 99 North to open on the highway by Nesters.
While waiting for provincial approval the original store was raided then a year later the new store was awarded a licence to open the new store by Nesters.
Fast forward to today when 99 North is one of the best employers in town and one of the very few independent stores in the country so we are able to offer livable wages, full medical and dental and agressive community donations.
It truely is a made in Squamish success story and seriously we should all be proud to live in a town where good things are still possible!
I've said it many times before and will say it many times again. I fu*king love this town.
Go Team Squamish!
