While the new year can be an exciting time of change and fresh starts, this often comes along with extraordinary pressure and unrealistic expectations.

Let this be a reminder that this new year - it is okay to rest!

Rest comes in many forms, and each is important to our overall well-being. We are all deserving of rest, so please remember to be gentle with yourself as you tackle your goals this year.

No matter how healthy our relationship, we will inevitably experience disagreements, arguments and larger conflicts! This is a normal part of all relationships.

Repair attempts are the things we do during or after conflict with our partner(s) to de-escalate and re-connect. Repair attempts are not about fixing what is broken, but about helping partners to get back on track.

These are some examples of repair attempts that can be helpful during times of conflict. It is important to remember that conflict resolution requires more than one perspective - one person must make the repair attempts and the other(s) must be open to receiving the repair attempt and not rejecting it. 🤍

Like anything, it can be trial and error discovering what works best for your relationship. Give them a try and see what works for you!

On this month’s installation of ‘Let’s Talk About It!” we are focusing on the impact social media can have on our mental health.

Whether or not we realize, we are being influenced daily by the content we interact with on social media. But don’t worry - the effects are not all negative! When utilized mindfully and intentionally, social media can have powerful positive impacts on our lives.

Here are some evidence-based methods of mitigating the risks that social media can pose to our mental health:

1. Limit your usage. Establishing boundaries for yourself surrounding your social media usage can positively impact your experience online.

2. Be mindful of how you feel. Do you notice certain types of content make you feel anxious or sad? Do certain news outlets cause increased fear? Be mindful of how social media makes you feel and adjust accordingly.

3. Prune who you are following online. Try your best to only follow accounts that empower or inspire you. You are in control of your following list!

4. Ask questions. Don’t believe everything that you read online and always remain vigilant.

5. Prioritize in-person social connections. While online social connections are important, try not to limit yourself! Prioritizing in-person social connections can mitigate loneliness and sadness that can arise from increased social media usage.

6. Reach out for help as needed. You are not alone! Reaching out to friends, family, a trusted adult or a mental health professional can be a powerful first step in addressing the negative impacts of social media on your mental health.

“We read to know we are not alone” – C.S. Lewis 📚✨

The topic of reading not only as a self-care activity, but also as a method of learning and healing has come up in multiple client sessions recently. These are some of my personal favourite books related to mental wellness. What are yours?

D.E.A.R.M.A.N is a skill intended to help develop effective interpersonal communication skills that help to get our needs met and promote healthy relationships with others.

Let review!

D - Describe the situation. Stick to the facts - share exactly what you are reacting to.

E - Express your feelings and opinions. Don’t assume that others know how you feel.

A - Assert yourself by asking for what you want. Others can’t read your mind - so make your needs known!

R - Reinforce your needs by explaining the positive effects of what it is you want or need. Here, you can also clarify the negative effects of not getting what you want or need.

M - Mindfully focus on your goals. Try not to get distracted - instead re-state your wants and needs.

A - Appear confident and competent. You deserve to be taken seriously!

N - Negotiate with others. Be willing to listen to possible solutions and engage in brainstorming.

If interpersonal communication is an ongoing struggle in your life, counselling may be able to help. Reach out today for your free 15-minute consultation.
