🍃 Walk & Talk Individual Counselling 🍃

Bringing the counselling session outdoors can have a beneficial impact on both your physical and mental well-being. It fosters a more relational approach as we spend time together outdoors and appreciate the familiarity of walking.

If you have been curious about where Walk & Talk sessions are held, I offer five locations around the St. John's and surrounding areas. These trails are accessible for strollers, wheels, and generally considered easy.

Walk & Talk may not be suitable for everyone. A virtual consultation is required before booking.

Our bodies are wired to respond to threats, whether that threat is real or perceived. When we are under stress with little to no time for rest, our bodies can feel stuck in fight or flight. This stress response can leave us feeling on edge, hypervigilant, easy to erupt, anxious, or unable to relax. It can impact sleep, mood, relationships, and overall well-being.

Practicing to relax your body and engage the parasympathetic nervous system is an effective way to complete the stress cycle and promote rest. Research suggests laughing, social interaction, movement, breathwork, affection, creative expression, and crying are all effective strategies to complete the stress cycle. Completing the stress cycle is important in order to return our body and brain to a state where they can think, feel, and respond effectively.

Worries during pregnancy or postpartum are common and normal. You may worry about the health of your baby, how a baby will impact your relationship, the financial cost, or you may worry the first night you bring the baby home. A certain amount of worry is to be expected during this life transition. In fact, it is protective.

Yet, when worry becomes distressing and consuming, it may indicate a need for support. If worry becomes obsessive thinking, distressing and consuming scary thoughts, or if you change your behaviour to accommodate the distress - it may be indicative of perinatal anxiety.

Common symptoms include:
🔹️excessive worry, ruminating
🔹️restlessness, feeling on edge
🔹️irritability, can escalate to rage
🔹️feeling dread
🔹️difficulties falling asleep due to worry
🔹️frequently checking on the baby
🔹️somatic symptoms like rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, sweating, GI distress

Anxiety can develop during pregnancy and continue into postpartum if left untreated. It is estimated that 13%-40% of new mothers experience PPA. Anxiety is often accompanied with symptoms of postpartum depression.

There is no one cause of perinatal anxiety. However, biological changes that occur during the perinatal period, psychosocial factors, previous mental health struggles, systemic issues can all impact perinatal adjustment and wellbeing.

Perinatal mental wellbeing can be protected by supporting new parents. This includes making sure the new parent is getting enough sleep, engaging in social support for a sense of belonging, that professionals are screening for PMADs, etc. No one should have to suffer alone.

About Me

I started my doula journey after the birth of my child in 2017. The transition to motherhood and all that comes with it made me passionate about providing support to pregnant and parenting people. I am a strong advocate for reproductive rights in healthcare. My services include postpartum support, abortion support and infant and pregnancy loss support. I am passionate for improving perinatal mental health services and education, and improving access to services for underserved people and families.

The Mindful Doula’s postpartum support services include emotional support and education with breastfeeding/chestfeeding, infant care, light housework, meal preparation, safe sleep guidelines, babywearing instruction, tips on bonding with your baby. I provide evidence-based information and education on postpartum topics. I provide access to a lending library and breast/chestfeeding equipment (for instructional purposes only). I am currently certifying with Doula Canada and am a trained abortion doula with Abortion Support Services Atlantic.
