If you or someone you know is struggling with the impacts of trauma, EMDR could help. Email me at danielle@coastalhealthnl.ca for a free phone consult; I'd be happy to answer any questions and discuss your options.
EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, is an effective therapeutic approach designed to help individuals who have experienced trauma.
The therapy is based on the idea that our emotional health is closely connected to our physical state. EMDR utilizes a body-focused technique known as bilateral stimulation. In this process, a therapist guides the client through specific eye movements, sounds, or taps to help reprocess and relocate improperly stored memories to a healthier part of the brain.
Trauma can cause the brain to store and process memories inaccurately, which may result in past experiences influencing present emotions and behaviors. Current stimuli, whether connected to the trauma or not, can trigger reactions similar to those from the original event because the brain perceives the past traumatic experience as ongoing.
