Today is about more than just fireworks and flags — we honour the strength, care, and connection that define our Canadian communities.

On July 1st, Newfoundland and Labrador will also observe Memorial Day alongside Canada Day, honoring the sacrifices of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont-Hamel during WWI. This Memorial Day, we pause to honour the brave members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who gave their lives at Beaumont-Hamel and beyond. Their courage is woven into the fabric of our province’s history.

As the day continues, we join fellow Canadians in celebrating the values that unite us — resilience, compassion, and community.

📍 Honouring a Trailblazer in St. John’s

Last week, two of our team members had the privilege of attending the unveiling of a long-overdue tribute to one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most influential figures: Armine Nutting Gosling.

Unveiled in Bannerman Park, close to her former home and the Colonial Building, the new statue celebrates Gosling’s tireless advocacy for women's right to vote and her legacy of pushing for equality and inclusion in our province.

At Fonemed, we are proud to support and witness moments like this—where history, justice, and art intersect to tell the stories that shape our communities. Huge congratulations to PerSIStence Theatre Company and all those involved in making this powerful tribute a reality.

📅 June 19 | Honoring Freedom

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth—a powerful milestone in American history that symbolizes resilience, liberation, and the continued fight for equity.

On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. Juneteenth marks the true beginning of emancipation for many and serves as a time to honor Black history, culture, and the enduring pursuit of justice.
