Advanced yoga is not just about doing intense physical postures and contorting yourself into extreme angles.

In fact, an advanced yoga practice isn’t something you can observe from the outside.

Evolving in your yoga practice is about creating conditions that allow you to deepen your experience and connect within.

Yoga props are a supportive way for you to explore depth in your practice. Outer stability allows for inner space to explore your sweet spot. And ultimately embrace more inner stability.

Practicing from this place is advanced. And this looks different for everyone.

We have a variety of classes to meet you where you are and allow for a sustainable lifelong yoga practice.

💫 Teacher Spotlight 💫 Darla’s yoga practice began in her university days back in the mid 1990s. Her love for yoga grew deeper each year and in 2014 she completed a 200 hr teacher training at Therapeutic Yoga Studio, Halifax and in 2015/16 she completed a 150hr Advanced Teacher Training with Hart Lazer of United Yoga, Montreal.

She has completed hundreds of hours of yoga training over the past 30 years, a 120-hr Pilates Mat Certification and recently has completed her Level I Iyengar Yoga certification which was by far the most in-depth level of study she has completed thus far. Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers are extremely well trained. Teacher training is rigorous and spans a three to five-year period in which teachers follow a program based on an international syllabus and standards set by B.K.S. Iyengar.

As a dedicated yoga student and teacher, with a true desire to learn how movement of the body can help create space in our bodies and minds, you will find Darla’s classes can help you explore your own body and mind.

Darla’s curiosity about the mobility and stability of the body inspires her to offer diverse yoga classes and yoga workshops on ways we can cultivate these qualities in both the body and mind. She is an innovative and creative teacher using props extensively to help her students connect with their bodies and minds to bring a sense of stillness and peace within.

This Spring, starting April 15, Darla is teaching Mobility & Stability on Wednesday evenings.

💫 Teacher Spotlight 💫 With over 25 years of dedicated yoga practice and 5 years of teaching experience, Valerie brings a warm, encouraging energy to every class. Her sessions strike the perfect balance between fun and challenge, helping students grow in strength, flexibility, and focus.

Valerie is passionate about the many ways yoga supports overall well-being—nurturing the mind, strengthening the body, and fostering a positive outlook on life. She believes regular practice can help prevent or ease many of the challenges we face as we age.

Classes are thoughtfully designed to be accessible and restorative, with a gentle background playlist to set a calming tone. Students make use of props such as bolsters, blankets, yoga blocks, and belts to deepen stretches, enhance alignment, and increase comfort in many poses. Valerie also incorporates self-discovery work using yoga balls to release tension and restore elasticity in the fascia, the body’s connective tissue.

Participants leave feeling more open, mobile, and energized—having stretched, strengthened, and awakened both body and mind.

This Spring, starting April 17, Val is teaching Lengthen, Strengthen & Realign on Friday mornings.

💫 Teacher Spotlight 💫 Christie offers a welcoming space within an all-inclusive environment for all bodies to feel accepted and loved.

Christie had invested 30 years of attempting to conform her body to fit in with the ideal diet and fitness cultures thin-able body realizing there is no magical panacea for all. Through teaching various yoga and fitness classes she has witnessed clients initially participating but not returning due to inaccessibility and alienation. During the past three years she has divested herself from the oppressive and exclusive mindset of the diet and fitness culture.

This new mindset has been challenging and at times isolating but she has been ever so grateful for the teachings of yoga to strengthen her psyche. Christie is committed to creating a community offering support for people learning to love their bodies without shame or pressure to change. Continuing on her journey in a bigger body she has learned ways to adapt and make movement accessible and enjoyable again.

In 2018, Christie completed Yoga Teacher Training with Meaghan Burridge and Bobby Bessey. She has 200 hours of Yin training with Stephanie Calhoun; Level 1 Meditation teacher training with Miranda Squires; Yoga for All with Dianne Bondy and Amber Karnes. Christie also has training in Yoga Nidra, Karma Kids Yoga and Restorative Yoga.

Christie is a mother of two beautiful boys and she is a self-described nature enthusiast enjoying our beautiful and rugged environment.

Christie’s invitation and expectations are simply “come as you are, be yourself and leave with an enabling strength.”

This Spring, starting April 14, Christie is teaching Flow & Yin on Tuesdays, Gentle on Wednesdays, and Flow on Saturdays.

Join Darla each week this Spring for Mobility & Stability yoga, starting April 15!

In Mobility & Stability Yoga we will learn how to establish the foundation and strength of poses and pose variations (stability), while we learn to extend and evolve through lengthening and breathing (mobility). A variety of props such as blocks, blankets, straps, bolsters and chairs will be used to assist with explorations of postures.

Finding the balance between mobility and stability is vital to sustaining a life-long practice in a healthy aging body. Many of Darla’s regular students are over 40 and well into their 50’s and 60’s but it doesn’t matter what age you are. If you are new to yoga or a long-time student, come join the fun to help you navigate the joys that come with growing into an aging body.

These classes are suitable for active beginners and continuing practitioners who are ok with weight-bearing and floor-based postures (such as hands and knees, downward facing dog, and prone (belly down) postures).

Join us in person at Embody Yoga & Wellness, 10 Forbes street in the west end of St. John’s or online from anywhere via Zoom.

New to us? Get started with a Discovery Pass.

Returning? Join with a Membership or one of our pass options, space permitting, including Drop-in, 5-Class, or 10-Class Pass.
