A funny coincidence - but a good lesson to share
A few days ago, we received a call from an obviously spoofed phone number, asking if we'd like to purchase funeral insurance. (We always pick up our phone, regardless of number, due to the unpredictable nature of our work).
The caller began asking us for personal identification (date of birth, Social Insurance Number, etc.) before we committed to purchasing. Obviously, we hung up at this point in the call!
If a funeral home can receive scam calls about funeral insurance, so can you! A few reminders to protect yourself and your family at a potentially vulnerable time:
โ
If you choose to pre-pay your services through a funeral home that's licensed by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, your money is protected by Ontario laws (and know that prepayment is a choice)
โ
Never give out personal information to a cold caller, especially if you are feeling forced into a decision you're not ready to make
โ
Don't be afraid to hang up on a spam call, even if it's a human on the other end of the line
โ
Let calls from unrecognized numbers go to voicemail
โ
If you have questions about pre-payment, contact your local funeral provider of choice for clarity. We know the local rules and laws.
