New clients will always ask me "What should I do with my horse after their massage?"
First and foremost, my answer is to give them time to process and absorb what has just occurred to their body during treatment. I suggest that the horse go back in their stall (15 - 20min) so they can have some quiet time, have a nap, a big drink...just simply BE, with no human interaction or touch.

This beautiful and very special mare, has been a long time client of mine. After her massage, her owner asked if she could turn her out in the arena for her quiet time. My response was a big thumbs up, knowing the mare wouldn't run around and un-do everything that had just been done.

So out she went. She walked over to the wooden platform, put her front feet on it, and stood there and YAWNED, and RELEASED for a half-hour...a whole 30min. What a smart horse. She new what she needed, and she enjoyed her quiet time.

I bet you make funny faces during your massages too lol!!

As goofy as this young guy looks, he is 'telling' me all sorts of things with this behaviour. When horses make these movements during their massage, I take it as a cue, that I am definitely getting into an area, that they are happy to have 'opened up'.

The neck stretching not only acts as an 'invite' to get deeper into treatment, but it shows me how relaxed the horse is with me, and that they also have a fairly good sense of what their body needs.

The next time your horse is giving you some goofy faces or doing some neck stretching on their own, maybe take the time to 'listen' to what they are telling you.

PAY ATTENTION to your horse’s posture!

How they stand in the cross-ties, out in the field, standing in the middle of the arena during a lesson, and even in the stall, can give you so much information as to what is going on in their body.

The key is to look for consistency in the patterns in which they are most often standing in.

Just like people, they can have ‘bad posture’. I find with horses that I have worked with who have ‘bad posture’ that sometimes the posture causes the imbalances in the body, and sometimes the imbalances in the body, cause the postural concerns.

To help correct this, gently ask them to correct their posture while standing in the cross-ties or grooming stall. This is a good place to start reinforcing for them, a stance that better supports their body. Gentle consistency is the key.

Follow-up Massage! When massaging a new horse, it is often the follow-up massage, or the second appointment, where the results are most noticeable. The horse is a bit more relaxed as they know who I am, and there is a trust and connection developing.

And…like an onion, you have to slowly ‘peel’ back the layers before you start to see and feel the bigger picture, which then can help to dictate the course of further treatments.

Did you know…That the topline of the horse technically ends at the points of the hocks, with the insertions of the hamstrings?

This guy here, is showing me his appreciation for the work I am doing on his hamstrings, by lowering his head and ‘inviting’ me a little deeper into the muscles.

By stretching his head downward, he is stretching his topline, and he is feeling the effects of the massage ALLLL the way down to his hock.

How much tension do you generally hold in your neck??

Now ask your horse the same question. The horse’s neck and it’s musculature structure plays a few important roles, especially in it’s physical activity. The neck acts as the horse’s balance beam, and the muscles in the neck play a pivotal role in elevating the front end.

By simply keeping up on stretching the neck elevators along the crest, you keep your horse’s neck tension down, and you keep their ability to be athletic during their job, up!

This stretch is often one the horses really enjoy…as Chappie clearly does!
