🎒 Top 5 Backpack Mistakes That Can Cause Back Pain in Kids

Back-to-school means heavier backpacks — but the wrong setup can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain. Here are the most common mistakes parents should watch for:
1️⃣ Too Heavy → Backpack should be less than 10–15% of your child’s body weight.
2️⃣ Wearing One Strap → Uneven load = extra strain on shoulders & spine.
3️⃣ Straps Too Loose → Bag hanging low pulls on the lower back.
4️⃣ Oversized Backpack → Backpack should sit just below the shoulders, above the hips.
5️⃣ Poor Packing → Heavier items close to the back, lighter items in front.

✅ The right backpack fit = less pain, better posture, and more energy for kids to learn & play!

👉 If your child complains of back or shoulder pain, a physiotherapist can help.

Hydration & Muscle Health 💧💪
August is hot — and your muscles know it.

Dehydration doesn’t just make you tired. It can:
⚠️ Slow tissue healing
⚠️ Increase your risk of cramps and strains
⚠️ Reduce joint lubrication and shock absorption
⚠️ Impact muscle performance and recovery

Here’s how to stay ahead:
✅ Drink consistently — don’t wait until you’re thirsty
✅ Add electrolytes if you're sweating a lot (hello, summer workouts!)
✅ Pair water with movement — hydrating helps fascia, joints, and muscle fibers work better

Think of hydration as part of your recovery plan — not just a summer checklist.
Your tissues will thank you.

Physio on the Go – Pt. 3 ✈️🚗🧍‍♂️

Planes, trains, and long road trips = stiff hips, tight backs, and cranky necks. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are 3 easy stretches to reset your body on the go:
Seated Spinal Twist
In a car, plane, or patio chair — sit tall, gently twist to one side, hold for 15–20 sec, repeat other side. Feeds your spine and improves mobility.

Standing Hip Flexor Stretch
After sitting too long, your hips get tight. Take a lunge position, tuck your pelvis, and feel the front of the hip open up. Great after driving!

Neck Rolls & Chin Tucks
Reset your tech neck: slowly roll your head side to side, then gently tuck your chin in (double-chin style) to realign your neck.

💡 Pro tip: Set a timer to stretch every 2 hours while traveling. Your body (and mood) will thank you.

Physio on the Go – Pt. 2 🏕️✈️🧘

No gym? No problem. Whether you're at the lake, on the road, or just in vacation mode — your body still craves movement.

Here are 3 exercises you can do anywhere:
Glute Bridges
Lying on your back, knees bent — lift your hips up, squeeze, and lower slowly. Great for back support + core strength.
Wall Angels
Back flat against a wall, raise and lower your arms slowly like you're making a snow angel. Perfect for posture and shoulder mobility.
Standing Calf Raises
Use a picnic table, railing, or wall for balance. Slow, controlled lifts help ankle stability and circulation (especially after long drives).

Bonus: Do each for 10–15 reps. No equipment, no excuses.
Your future self will thank you.

🎒 Backpack Safety Week is August 14–18

Backpacks can be a pain — literally.

A poorly packed or worn backpack can lead to shoulder strain, poor posture, and even back pain in growing kids. Here's how to keep spines happy this school year:
✅ Pack light – A backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of a child’s body weight.
✅ Use both straps – Always. One-strap slinging = uneven stress on the spine.
✅ Adjust the height – The bag should sit just below the shoulders and above the hips.
✅ Heavy items go closest to the back – Distribute weight evenly to prevent leaning and slouching.

Keep these tips in mind as you start planning for back to school!

Camping, Road Trips & Your Back

August adventures are great for the soul — but not always for your spine.
Whether you're hauling coolers, driving for hours, or sleeping on a questionable air mattress... your back might need some extra love.

Here’s how to keep it happy:
- Lift smarter – Bend at the knees, not your back. Keep gear close to your body and avoid twisting.
- Stretch before AND after driving – Hip flexor and hamstring stretches go a long way.
- Sleep setup matters – Use a pillow between your knees (side sleeping) or under them (back sleeping) to keep your spine aligned.

Pro tip: A rolled-up hoodie makes a great lumbar support for the car.
Enjoy the adventure — but don’t let your back suffer for it. We’ve got your back when you get home.

Summer Physio on the Go ☀️🚗

Away from your regular routine? You can still support your body — no clinic, gym, or fancy equipment needed.

Here are 3 easy ways to keep moving, no matter where summer takes you:
- Stretch it out after long drives – Hip flexors and low backs take the hit. A quick standing lunge stretch can work wonders.
- Beach towel > yoga mat – Use it for core exercises, mobility work, or even a standing calf stretch.
- Hydrate like it’s your job – Muscles (and joints!) need fluid to function and heal well, especially in the heat.

Your body doesn’t take summer off — but we can help make sure it still feels great while you're out living your best life.
