⛑️ First aid for a fracture focuses on minimizing movement of the injured area, controlling bleeding, and managing pain and swelling until professional medical help arrives. This includes immobilizing the limb with a splint, applying ice, and elevating the injured area.
✅️ Steps for First Aid:
🦺 1. Ensure Safety:
Make sure the area is safe for both the injured person and the first aider.
☎️ 2. Call for Help:
If the injury is severe, like a suspected spinal, skull, or pelvic fracture, or if the person is unconscious, call emergency services.
🩹 3. Control Bleeding:
If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or dressing.
🦴 4. Immobilize the Injury:
Do not attempt to straighten the bone or push a protruding bone back in.
Use a splint to immobilize the limb above and below the fracture.
🗞 Padding the splint can help reduce pain. If a professional splint isn't available, use materials like rolled-up magazines, cardboard, or even clothing to stabilize the limb. For arm fractures, use a sling to support the arm.
🧊 5. Apply Ice:
Apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the injured area for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and pain.
🫀 6. Elevate the Injury:
Raise the injured limb above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling.
🚨 7. Treat for Shock:
If the person feels faint or is breathing rapidly, lay them down with their head slightly lower than their body and raise their legs.
❌️ 8. Do Not Give Food or Drink:
If the person might need surgery, avoid giving them anything to eat or drink.
👀 9. Monitor the Person:
Keep a close eye on the injured person's condition and be prepared to provide CPR if needed.
💥 Important Considerations:
If you are unsure about the severity of the injury, treat it as a fracture.
❌️ Never try to realign a suspected fracture yourself.
✅️ Always seek professional medical advice for any suspected fracture.
