It's officially summer, and while we love the sunshine, it’s important to remember that hot weather can be dangerous for our pets.

🚫 Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes. On a warm day, the temperature inside a vehicle can soar to deadly levels in just moments—even with the windows cracked. If you see a pet in a hot car in distress, call 911.

Signs of heatstroke in pets include excessive panting or drooling, lethargy or confusion, and rapid heartbeat. If you think your pet has heatstroke, take them to your veterinarian immediately.

Help spread the word! Share this post to keep our furry friends safe all summer long.

🚨 HEAT STROKE IN DOGS: A DEADLY EMERGENCY 🚨

With this extreme heat event, our emergency team is already seeing cases of heat stroke in dogs—a life-threatening condition that can escalate within minutes.

🐶 Dogs don’t sweat like we do. They rely on panting to cool down, which isn’t always enough in extreme heat.

What are the signs of heat stroke?
☀️ Excessive panting or drooling
☀️ Weakness or collapse
☀️ Bright red or pale gums
☀️ Vomiting or diarrhea
☀️ Seizures or confusion
☀️ Extremely high core temperature

How to prevent heat stroke:
✅ Never leave your dog in a parked car—even for a few minutes.
✅ Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening.
✅ Provide shade and constant access to cool, fresh water.
✅ Avoid strenuous play during peak heat hours.
✅ Watch flat-faced breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs) and older dogs closely—they’re at higher risk.

If your dog shows any signs of heat stroke, act fast:
1️⃣ Move them to a cool area immediately.
2️⃣ Offer small amounts of water.
3️⃣ Wet them with cool (not cold) water, especially paws and belly.
4️⃣ Call your nearest emergency clinic immediately.

🌡️ Heat stroke can cause organ failure and death if not treated quickly. If you're unsure—it's always better to be safe and have your dog checked!

Although common tick habitats include wooded areas, tall grasses and leaf litter, you can find a tick just about anywhere - even your own backyard. Since they can latch onto a host quite easily, it's important to always thoroughly tick check yourself and your pets, and use parasite prevention for your pets. Speak to your veterinarian to learn more about pets and tick safety.

Have a safe long weekend.

Happy Victoria Day weekend! ☀️ For many, it signals the start of summer vacations, but for us, it’s the beginning of our busiest season.

Sometimes, our wait times for “green” or stable patients can be significant if your pet has been assessed by our RVTs and has been determined to have stable vitals. For example, a patient that has been hit by a car will be examined prior to a vomiting pet.

If you are the owner of that vomiting pet, we truly appreciate your patience and understanding while we treat the critical patients first. What you may not see in the back, is staff members treating several critical pets at a time.

We cannot accept verbal abuse from owners as we do our best to treat every patient in a timely manner. Please be kind. 🩷 We promise we are doing our best to provide every single patient with the care they need.

Ticks are more than just a nuisance — they can transmit Lyme disease, which can seriously impact your pet’s health. But the good news is that it's preventable. Here’s how you can protect your pet:

🔹 Use vet-approved parasite prevention.
🔹 Check your pet (and yourself) after outdoor adventures.
🔹 Keep your yard tidy and tick-free.
🔹 Stay informed about tick activity in your area.

Prevention is always easier than treatment. Schedule a visit with your veterinarian to discuss options suitable for your pet.

Easter lilies may be beautiful, but they're extremely toxic to cats and can be fatal if ingested, even in small amounts. 🐱❌ This holiday, keep your feline friend safe by keeping these flowers out of reach, or better yet, gifting them to a cat-free home.
