Congratulations to the Kehewin family and to Melissa Cardinal-Grant, Midwife extraordinaire, who is truly dedicated to empowering families and bringing birth back to the land.s

With deep love and gratitude, we welcome baby boy- Clover Benson Kehewin
born on August 14, 2025 on the land that carries our ancestors in Kehewin Cree Nation,
surrounded by his family, elders, birth support workers, and the gentle hands of our midwife, Melissa Cardinal-Grant. 🫶🏼

He entered this world to the soft sound of our Cree language,
his first moments wrapped in smudge,
bathed in love, ceremony, and song.
A baby welcoming song was sung,
a prayer carried by those who waited for him,
with hearts wide open and spirits strong.

He came into being under open skies,
held by the land, lifted by tradition, and embraced by wahkohtowin. ❤️

Already, he is teaching us about love, patience, and the power of healthy beginnings.

We are humbled, grateful, and so deeply in love with this beautiful birth work, we continue to pray in ceremony that we are guided by the kokoms and that we continue to have our baby’s born on the land. 🦅

Heather will be working with a senior student for the next year!! Please welcome Anna 🙂

Hello! My name is Anna (she/her) and I am a senior midwifery student at Mount Royal University. I am so excited to spend the next year working and learning alongside Heather at Passages Midwifery!

Before being called to midwifery, I completed a degree in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Alberta. Through my studies, I gained a great passion for reproductive justice, bodily autonomy, decolonization, and 2SLGBTQIA+/ BIPOC inclusive care.

I focused my studies on the ethics of informed choice and inclusion in maternity care, and this work lead me straight to midwifery, which I see as the perfect blend of the science, art and activism that is required to care for birthing people and their families

On a personal note, I love to spend my free time arranging flowers, checking out new cafes, listening to true crime podcasts and thrifting. I also definitely fit into the midwife stereotype of being obsessed with crochet, even though I like starting projects a lot more than I like finishing them!

I feel deeply honoured and privileged to be a part of your care team and look forward to walking (and learning) alongside you through your journey into parenthood!

Our Story

Our founder, Noreen Walker, RM, was a pioneer midwife in Alberta. Although we lost her in April 2017, her legacy lives on through the thousands of families she has served over 40 years, the babies she has welcomed, and through Passages Midwifery, the practice she created.

Our midwives all share the same philosophy: that birth is a profound, life-changing experience for a family, and it is our joyous responsibility to be your guide as you prepare for this big day. We believe that the more safe, calm, and supported our clients feel during pregnancy and birth, the safer and healthier their births will be.

At Passages, we enthusiastically support waterbirth, homebirth, and VBAC. We are here to guide you, inform you, and empower you. You have the power to make your own choices when it comes to designing your perfect birth.
