Measles exposure risk in Rosthern

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is notifying the public of measles exposure risks in Rosthern. The exposure risks resulted from a confirmed case of measles. Individuals who were at any of the following locations during these time periods should monitor themselves closely for up to 21 days after the exposure:

Rosthern
• Rosthern Hospital – Emergency Department (2016 2nd Street, Rosthern):
o Friday, May 2, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
o Friday, May 2, 2025 from 7:25 p.m. to Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 3:40 a.m.
o Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 5:25 p.m. to Sunday, May 4 at 5:20 a.m.

Measles symptoms include:
• fever,
• cough,
• runny nose,
• red eyes,
• fatigue,
• irritability (feeling cranky or in a bad mood),
• small, white spots (known as Koplik spots) inside the mouth and throat, and
• red blotchy rash, which develops on the face and spreads down the body about three to seven days after symptoms begin and can last four to seven days.

Measles is prevented by vaccination. The measles vaccine is safe, effective and free. With two doses, measles vaccination is almost 100 per cent effective. Please review your vaccination status (if you were immunized in Saskatchewan, check your MySaskHealthRecord) or discuss with your health practitioner to ensure all you and your family’s immunizations are up to date.

Due to the highly contagious nature of measles, if you exhibit any of the above symptoms AND were at the identified location during the specified times, please call HealthLine 811 for symptom assessment and care advice. You may also contact your physician or nurse practitioner and inform them that you may have been exposed to measles. Do not attend a clinic in person if you are symptomatic—call HealthLine 811 for care advice. Anyone potentially exposed may be eligible for preventative treatment for up to six days after exposure. If you are in medical distress, please call BEFORE presenting to the emergency department or call 911, ensuring you identify that you may have been exposed to measles.

Measles is a highly contagious. It can spread very easily to others through the air. The virus can live up to two hours in the air or on surfaces in a space where a person coughed or sneezed. It can spread from four days before a rash appears until four days after a rash develops. Through this period, a person needs to stay in strict isolation to avoid spreading the infection to others.

Shout out to Jennelle Hubick, a Nurse Practitioner Clinical Facilitator (NPCF) on being the Nurse Practitioner Association of Canada April 2025 Featured NP and the recipient of the 2024 NPAC NP Awards of Excellence - Saskatchewan.

***

As a previous board member of the Saskatchewan Association of NPs she was influential in advocating for admission and discharge privileges for NPs. Additionally, she serves as a clinical facilitator with the University of Saskatchewan and mentors many students.

Jennelle is a leader within her community too. Her passion for the care of older adults led her to establish a local Alzheimer’s support group for families and caregivers. She sit on the board of directors for Age Friendly Strasbourg, which facilitates monthly wellness sessions for seniors in the community. Jennelle regularly presents to the group on a variety of topics, and utilizes her professional relationships to bring in speakers to benefit the community. Additionally, Jennelle serves on the board of directors of Foundations for Living Well, a group aimed at supporting the mental health of community members.

Jennelle empowers those around her to excel. She is an outstanding mentor, with a passion for learning and professional development. Jennelle regularly preceptors NP students, and has been known to take on more than one student at a time. She nurtures confidence in learners whilst pushing them to deepen their knowledge base and expand their critical thinking skills.

When Strasbourg was left with a significant gap in primary health care services due to an inability to recruit a second physician to the community, Jennelle demonstrated strong leadership, innovation, and change agency as she was able to successfully advocate for funding to be transferred to a NP position. Jennelle changed the clinic template structured within the EMR allowing for better access to care as patients needed it. This template is now being implemented in a second clinic experiencing similar struggles.

The need for primary health care services in Strasbourg is exponential. An aging community with a large surrounding rural catchment area places high demand on providers within the community. With the resignation of a fee for service physician in the community, the primary care clinic became overwhelmed. Recognizing the inability to provide safe patient care with a rapidly expanding patient panel, Jennelle successfully advocated in closing her practice temporarily. The pause in accepting new patients ensured that her existing patients were having their needs met until such time when it was safe to gradually reopen herself to accepting new patients

Outside of her clinical practice, Jennelle is a strong supporter of the arts and encourages community members to step outside their comfort zone and participate. She directs and acts in local theater productions and has been instrumental in the Do It With Class youth organization. Her work provides a safe space for youth interested in the arts so they feel valued and respected as they hone their love and skill for music and dance."
