TMJ : Temporomandibular joint/disorders (TMDs) are a group of more than 30 conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement

Often caused by a combination of factors, including jaw injuries, joint disease like arthritis, and muscle tension. Clenching or grinding teeth (bruxism), stress, and even poor posture can also contribute. At times can be from Sleeping “wrong” in a postion that puts pressure on the jaw. Eating overuse and Yawing with a very wide opening.

Physiotherapy Treatments used:

• Hands-on manual therapy to restore pain-free range of motion at the TMJ, off-load the irritated TMJ disc, and enable proper gliding at the joint.
• Hands-on soft tissue massage and stretching of tight jaw and neck muscles.
• Training in jaw relaxation techniques to enable tight chewing muscles to release excessive tension.
• Dry needling or acupuncture to address any trigger points in jaw muscles and reduce pain.
• Strengthening exercises to address muscle imbalances of jaw muscles, and to correct faulty motor patterning of the jaw during opening and/or closing movements.
• Advice on sleep positioning, chewing pattern and diet, temporarily modifying food size or texture to decrease stress to the jaw, thereby allowing room for recovery.
• Postural strategies for decreasing strain on the jaw due to postural factors (addressing any positioning/ergonomic factors due to workstation set-up, forward head posture, etc.).
• Treatment of the neck and back (and even the pelvis in some cases!). Joint restrictions found in these areas can adversely impact the position of the jaw and movement patterns in some individuals.

Safety While Snow Shoveling

Every year, thousands of people are seriously hurt while shoveling snow, primarily suffering heart, head, back, and bone injuries. Snow shoveling is a risky activity that most people don’t realize, but thankfully, there are also ways to manage the risks!

Shovels: Many shovels have no hand grips, are too long/short, and are made out of heavy steel. You should avoid bending, twisting, and overexerting while moving the snow to avoid hurting your spine. Find a lightweight plastic or aluminum shovel with an adjustable length and with an ergonomically curved to reduce the risk of muscle injury.

Never toss snow over the shoulder, since this involves twisting the body. Instead, shovel straight ahead to minimize the necessary movements. Also, push snow instead of lifting it whenever possible, and don't walk the snow long distances

Footwear: Wear slip-resistant boots or shoes, never walk on ice, always walk slowly when walking on snow, and salt and sand as you go.

Take Breaks and Hydrate!!

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that affects brain function. Effects are often short term and can include headaches and trouble with concentration, memory, balance, mood and sleep.
Concussions usually are caused by an impact to the head or body that is associated with a change in brain function. Not everyone who experiences a blow to the body or head has a concussion.
Some concussions cause the person to lose consciousness, but most do not.
Falls are the most common cause of concussions. Concussions also are common among athletes who play a contact sport
Physical symptoms of a concussion may include:
• Headache.
• Ringing in the ears.
• Nausea.
• Vomiting.
• Fatigue or drowsiness.
• Blurry vision.
Other symptoms of a concussion include:
• Confusion or feeling as if in a fog.
• Amnesia surrounding the event.
• Dizziness or "seeing stars."

Symptoms in children
Concussions can be hard to recognize in infants and toddlers because they can't describe how they feel. Concussion clues may include:
• Dazed appearance.
• Listlessness and tiring easily.
• Irritability and crankiness.
• Loss of balance and unsteady walking.
• Excessive crying.
• Change in eating or sleeping patterns.
• Lack of interest in favorite toys.
• Vomiting.
