Today's sweat angel may be helping me delay age-related bone loss by several years.
Will one workout alone, do it? Likely not. But one workout a few times a week over the course of decades, particularly if you are starting in your teens and twenties certainly can.
Did you know that peak bone mass is attained in our teens and early twenties and for women in particular the biggest gains are made within 4 years of puberty?
This means that we have a critical window to really encourage physical activity, especially activities where we are jarring our bones like basketball, volleyball, jogging, etc. to help shape our bones to continue to do those things.
Women that are consistently active, especially during these peak bone mass building years can delay the onset of age-related bone density, decline, menopause and osteoporosis up to several years compared to women that are less active in their young adulthood or those that lose their periods before age 45.
This matters because osteoporosis and bone loss are major risk factors for falls, annoying fractures, and more catastrophic fractures that can significantly impair quality of life in women with age.
So.... What are you doing today to help build your bones? Let me know in the comments below 🦴👇
