Well said.
The Race to AGI
Many companies want to move to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to perform the tasks that earn money because AGI doesn’t get sick, doesn’t have a family to contend with, and doesn’t underperform when they are tired, stressed, or grieving. Simply stated, AGI doesn’t express the array of issues that living beings do that can get in the way of income generation. And we are racing as fast as we can toward this fate.
To pretend this is anything except the removal of the final vestige of humanity in this industrial economic system is wishful thinking. This race to AGI is evidence of the sickness of corporate systems where every last obstacle, including humans themselves, are removed for the benefit of profit. And, that profit is not for human well-being, or ecosystem health, or solutions to any of the other existential crises we face. By removing the last bit of humanity, which is to write the remaining fragments of understanding, compassion, cooperation, and connection, those who will benefit the most no longer must do what human do—think about other people and other-than-human persons. They can now focus on profit to the exclusion of any emotion (except desire for more). And we are racing as fast as we can toward this fate.
Artificial General Intelligence is considered by corporate America to be next big thing. It is better than the existing labor force because it removes the humans. Modern economic systems have already waged a war on the environment and human health, but now it will eliminate the pesky, imperfect, whiny, and faulty humans that might complain, protest, or whistle-blow. It will incorporate a purer process of converting potential wealth—natural resources, ideas, analytical ability—into monetary wealth. It replaces natural intelligence with artificial intelligence. It is a separation of humans from the divine because it is further removed from the natural order. This is evidence of what corporate America holds sacred. And we are racing as fast as we can toward this fate.
Do you really believe that AGI is here to help humanity, life, and the planet? Look at who controls the learning of AGI. What are their values? Look at how much money is poured into the development of AGI. Do you really believe that those investments aren’t going to be recovered many-fold? Do you think that many millions of people being put out of work is an obstacle for the wide-spread rollout of AGI when that much money has already been spent? How does AGI help humans connect to humans and the creation we find ourselves enmeshed in? How does it help humans experience what they require for a fulfilled life? How does it help us recover our humanity in a time when the human touch seems to be dwindling? Think about it, we don’t craft with our hands anymore, we build things with factory machines, 3-D printers, and power tools. How do many choose to heal? It is with pharmaceuticals, lasers, and moving more and more toward robotics. Hell, we even have app-controlled toys for long-distance s*x. Everything we do now is already removed layers from humans making direct contact with that which they interact with. And this certainly has not made humans more fulfilled or more healthy. But, it has made a few more wealthy. And we are racing as fast as we can toward this fate.
