Wintering. The Power of Rest.
Did you know that Julius Caesar made January 1st the official start of the Roman year in 45 BCE? It was later cemented into place by Pope Gregory the XIII in 1582 with the Gregorian Calendar.
All the societal push for a New You, New Year, New Challenges, takes energy... energy that is naturally in low supply during the deepest month of winter. Embracing the natural cycles of rest, retreat, healing and resilience can prevent burn out and illnesses during the coldest months. Making for a more energetic and renewed "you" when the warmer temperatures arrive.
Before the Julian Calendar, New Year's Day varied. For the Romans it was March 1. Regions in England, March 25th. For Pagans Oct 31/Nov 1. Egyptians and Persians Sept 21. Early Greeks Dec 21.
If you are called to transform, set New Year's Intentions and power on in January, that is great! And if you feel the need to draw inward, rest and recover in January, go easy on yourself, as you are following your internal clock and your New Year will arrive as it should.
