Growing up we are often told to swallow our emotions, to calm down, that it’s not ladylike to express anger, etc etc. What we are not told is that emotions won’t be suppressed, they will insist on being heard, being seen. They bubble up as uncontrollable anger or depression. It can feel daunting being told to notice our emotions and allow them to show themselves with compassion, and yet when we do, we learn that they are not so scary, and in fact we have more control over our reactivity. Be kind to yourself, be curious about the emotions you feel, and above all, show yourself understanding and compassion.
