As you start off a new week, pay attention to the details of when you feel your best. Does having a good morning routine help start your day off well? Who are you surrounded by when you feel your best and safe to be your truest self? Did you nourish your body differently?

It’s the little things that create the big changes in our life. We are all unique so we need to find what works well for us. This is where intentional self awareness plays a big part.

As you begin to learn about yourself and what helps you feel good, be intentional about adding more of that into your life.

It is often the case that when we are struggling we feel completely alone. We may feel like no one truly understands what we’re going through and what we’re feeling. We may feel embarrassed and ashamed.

The reality is that you are not alone in your struggles and when you open up about it to those you feel safe with, you begin to remove the shame and stigma around mental health issues.

Strong communication is hard work. It’s easy for us to let our emotions get the best of us. When this happens, we risk losing track of what it is that we really need to communicate. Yelling, offending, and putting the other person down to try to get our point across is one way to throw respect out the window. Putting the best interest of the relationship and maintaining respect even when we feel hurt or frustrated is emotional growth that leads to healthy and strong communication.

Walk away, take a few minutes to cool off, and talk when you can keep respect at the forefront of the discussion.

Great relationships are not free from conflict - but they do have an abundance of respect.

The holiday season can be so difficult for many. You may feel completely disconnected from your environment. You may feel as though there’s something or someone missing while you’re trying to enjoy time with friends and family. It’s lonely to feel like in a room full of people, you’re finding it hard to be seen, heard, or understood.
Take time to comfort yourself. Take a deep breath, hold yourself close and remember to take it one day at a time.

Believing in ourselves can be tough at times. We feel we have tried but failed, we feel exhausted, we feel unmotivated. But the truth is that you’ve gotten through all of your hard days thus far! Even if you’ve had to crawl your way out of some of them.
Use that knowledge to help you get through the difficult days that may come - because they do come, but you can do it. You are strong and you are resilient. Repeat those words to yourself. You CAN do it. 🌿

When we have experienced great pain or trauma, we often find ourselves wanting answers. Why did this happen to me? How could they hurt me like that? How is someone capable of these actions?

The truth is, these are questions we may never get answers to. Especially when there is abuse involved, no answer would suffice because it would never justify the pain inflicted.

Understanding why something has happened is not a condition of accepting that it HAS happened. The purpose of acceptance is to help us heal and find peace - to begin in small ways letting go of the past and moving forward.

I find so much comfort in these simple words. The idea that the sun will rise again even after the darkest of nights gives us the hope that our hard days will not last forever.

One of my goals as a therapist is to help clients find and hold on to hope. Hope encourages us to try again even on our weakest days because we know there is light ahead.

So, I hope next time you’re feeling like the dark days are long, you will whisper to yourself - the sun will rise and I will try again. ☀️
