Polio eradication remains a shared global responsibility. After decades of progress, losing momentum now due to misinformation or fatigue could undo years of hard-earned gains, putting every nation at risk again. ๐ŸŒ World Mental Health Day- A Message of Solidarity

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we stand in solidarity with a group of future healthcare heroes who are facing immense pressure and uncertainty: International Medical Graduates (IMGs) immigrating to Canada.

Behind every application is a story of immense courage; leaving home, overcoming immense hurdles, and dedicating years to meeting the highest standards of Canadian medicine. They bring invaluable skills and diverse perspectives that are the lifeblood of a robust healthcare system.

Recent policy changes in Ontario have introduced profound stress, exacerbating the already challenging journey for these dedicated individuals. The weight of such uncertainty can be heavy, and it's a reminder that mental health is a collective responsibility.

To all IMGs: Your well-being matters. Your is seen, and your future is valued. Please know that you are not alone. We encourage you to , connect with your , and utilize .

๐Ÿงก National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ๐Ÿงก

Today, we honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never returned home. The legacy of these institutions continues to shape the health and well-being of Indigenous communities, contributing to disparities in mental, physical, and social health.

Let us mark this day by listening to Survivorsโ€™ stories, going beyond land acknowledgments with meaningful action, attending community events, amplifying Indigenous voices, and building partnerships. Reconciliation also means ongoing change; challenging colonial systems, unlearning bias, and taking responsibility for the Land we live and work on.

At BMY Health, we recognize reconciliation as a public health priority. Addressing historic harms, building trust, and listening to Indigenous voices are essential for health programs that are equitable, culturally safe, and effective. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, committed to advancing health equity and creating a healthier, more inclusive future for all.

โœจ Celebrating the Closing Ceremony of Our Research Internship Program in collaboration with BMY Health, Canada โœจ

Today, we successfully concluded another batch of the BMY Health Research Mentoring Program.

Over the past weeks, our interns engaged in intensive training in research methodology, data analysis, manuscript writing, and presentation skills. The closing ceremony was a celebration of their hard work, growth, and resilience.
As part of their journey, interns worked on diverse research projects employing different study designs, including:
๐Ÿ”น Qualitative phenomenological design exploring self-care practices of diabetes patients โ€” by Aliza, Saad, Farheen, Saba, Mehvish
๐Ÿ”น Case-control study developing a predictive model to distinguish between high-risk and low-risk cases of lymphadenopathy โ€” by Maryam, Ujala, Saba, Neeta

โœจ We also proudly recognized outstanding contributions with special awards:
๐Ÿ† Best Intern Awards
Dr. Aliza Hamdani
Dr. Farheen Atif
Dr. Maryam Aftab
๐ŸŽ“ The Top Intern also received a scholarship (25% fee refund).

๐ŸŒŸ Best Mentor Award
Dr. Syed Mustafa Ali

These recognitions were based on a transparent and objective process:
โœ”๏ธ For interns: 4-month attendance records, peer evaluation scores, and nominations from mentors/admin, focusing on active participation, quality of work, and professionalism.
โœ”๏ธ For mentors: scores from intern feedback.

While these awards highlight individual strengths, every intern and mentorโ€™s contribution was deeply valued. Each of you played an integral role in this journey, and we are proud of the collective achievements of the entire batch.

๐Ÿ™ A heartfelt thank you to our co-mentors, instructors, IRB & scientific reviewers, and the coordination team whose guidance shaped this journey โ€” and to our interns for their dedication and passion. Special thanks to Dr. Tahani Zaidi (reviewer for qualitative study) and Dr. Owais Raza (reviewer for quantitative study).

We are also excited to continue supporting our interns through:
๐Ÿ“Œ Continued access to lectures and resources via our LMS
๐Ÿ“Œ Audits for ethical closure of projects & knowledge translation activities for effective uptake of findings
๐Ÿ“Œ Our Alumni Community, a network for collaboration, opportunities, and recognition

At BMY Health, we remain committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers and health leaders. Congratulations once again to all interns โ€” the journey of learning continues! ๐Ÿš€

๐Ÿ”ฌ Self-Care for Researchers: Protecting Your Brain During Intellectual Work ๐Ÿง

As researchers, we often equate productivity with long hours of uninterrupted mental effort. But neuroscience tells a different story.

Prolonged intellectual work, especially beyond 4โ€“6 hours a day, can lead to , including buildup of glutamate and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brainโ€™s decision-making centers. This impairs clarity, slows thinking, and accelerates fatigue (Wiehler et al., 2022; Cobley et al., 2018). Without recovery, it can compromise long-term mental health.

Hereโ€™s how to protect your cognitive health and stay sharp:
โœ… Limit deep-focus tasks to 4โ€“6 hours/day with structured breaks (Boksem et al., 2006)
โœ… Prioritize sleep, which clears neurotoxins via the glymphatic system (Xie et al., 2013)
โœ… Move your body; exercise boosts brain resilience (Radak et al., 2013)
โœ… Eat an rich diet: berries, greens, omega-3s
โœ… Practice mindfulness, which modulates stress and preserves cognitive control (Goyal et al., 2014)

๐Ÿงช Research is a marathon, not a sprint.
Protecting your brain isn't a luxury, it's your most valuable research tool.
