Why does speech therapy sometimes look like play?

Play is one of the most natural ways children learn. In speech therapy, play helps keep children motivated while creating meaningful opportunities to practice speech and language skills.

Through play, children are encouraged to interact, take turns, use words, and problem-solve in ways that feel fun and natural. This helps children build skills they can carry into everyday life.

When therapy feels fun, learning happens more easily and more effectively 💬✨

✨ Weekly Sound Spotlight ✨

This week’s sound is “p.” Sometimes, we call this our Popping Sound 🎈. The “p” sound is made by bringing the lips together, building up air, and then letting the air pop out with the voice turned off.

Common errors we sometimes hear include “p” sounding like “b,” or the sound being left out of words. Practicing popping the lips together and exaggerating the air release can really help.

From a developmental perspective, the “p” sound is typically acquired by around 3 years of age, though some children may still be refining it as they grow.

Stay tuned for next week’s sound and more fun tips to support your child’s speech development! 🎉

🧠 Speech vs. Language — what’s the difference?

Although they’re often used interchangeably, speech and language are not the same. Speech refers to how sounds and words are produced, including pronunciation and clarity. Language refers to understanding and using words to share ideas, needs, and thoughts.
A child can have strong language skills but still struggle with speech sounds—or have clear speech but difficulty understanding or using language. Both are important parts of communication, and speech-language pathologists support both.

If you ever have questions about your child’s communication, we’re always here to help!

✨ It’s our Weekly Sound Spotlight ✨

This week’s sound is “m.” Sometimes, we call this our “Mmm Sound”. The “m” sound is made by bringing the lips together and turning your voice on, allowing the sound to come out through the nose.

Common errors we sometimes hear include “m” sounding like “b,” or the sound being left out of words altogether. Practicing holding the sound (“mmmm”) and feeling the vibration in the lips and nose can really help.

From a developmental perspective, the “m” sound is typically acquired by around 3 years of age, though some children may still be refining it as they grow.

Stay tuned for next week’s sound and more tips to support your child’s speech development! 🎉

✨ Welcome to our Weekly Sound Spotlight! ✨

Each week, we’ll highlight a different speech sound, how it’s made, common errors we might hear, and tips for practicing it. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, or just curious about speech sounds, this series is here to help you understand and celebrate the building blocks of speech, one sound at a time.

This week’s sound is “s.” Sometimes, we call this our Snake Sound 🐍. The “s” sound is made by placing the tongue just behind the top front teeth, keeping the sides of the tongue against the molars, and blowing air out. A helpful tip is to gently bite your teeth together and keep your tongue in place while hissing like a snake!

Common errors we sometimes hear include a frontal lisp, where “s” sounds like “th,” or substitutions like “s” → “sh,” as in “see” sounding like “she.” Practicing slowly and focusing on tongue placement can really help.

From a developmental perspective, the “s” sound is typically acquired by around 4 years of age, though some children may still be refining it as they grow.

Stay tuned each week for a new sound and fun tips to help support your child’s speech development!
