Today is World Spine Day - a global initiative for individuals to prioritize spine health across all aspects of life - at home, in the workplace, at schools, and within our communities. Health care providers are essential in promoting the importance of maintaining mobility, avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity, and educating about the risks over overloading the spine.

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Andrea⭐️

Why physio? After going through extensive physio myself for a knee injury and experiencing first hand how important the role of physio is, I was inspired to pursue this career to help others in their recovery too.

Favourite body part to treat? Knees and ankles.

Most prescribed exercises? Any variation of single leg strengthening - eg. Single leg squat, single leg deadlift, single leg heel raise.

Memorable patient moment? Not necessarily one particular moment, but I have many memorable patients that I’ve worked with over the years, who I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know as a person, outside of their injury.

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Kaylene⭐️

Why physio? I decided to pursue a career in physio because it is a very positive field to work in, focused on helping others improve. Plus it combines my passions of human anatomy and fitness!

Favourite body part to treat? Hard to choose, I’d say it’s between the knee and shoulder.

Most prescribed exercises? Sit to stand from chair (modified squat) and many variations of the dead bug.

Memorable patient moment? I had a patient that was dealing with chronic hip pain due to osteoarthritis. After just one session, with an individualized home exercise program, the patient came back a week later and was so excited with the progress. She couldn’t believe the difference just a few simple exercises could make!

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Krystie⭐️

Why physio? I played a lot of sports growing up, and spent a lot of time in physio. Had a great physio during high school that let me shadow her, and I was hooked!

Favourite body part to treat? The lower extremity - hips, knees, ankles.

Most prescribed exercises? Posture and core.

Memorable patient moment? Gentleman, spine surgery, doctors told him he’d likely never ski again. He worked so hard, did everything I asked him to do. I had the pleasure of taking him skiing once, and I couldn’t keep up with him!

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Brinder⭐️

Why physio? My interest in physio was sparked when I noticed the impact simple movements had on the quality of life for my grandparents. This inspired me to explore the idea of body mechanics and their effect on day to day lives.

Favourite body part to treat? Neck and hips.

Most prescribed exercises? Core activation and strengthening, cat cow and bird dog.

Memorable patient moment? I had a patient come in complaining about debilitating hip pain, which prevented her from being able to go on walks and created issues with sleeping through the night. After treating her hip and also assessing and treating her lower back, she noticed a significant difference and was able to return to her walks and sleep much better through the night.

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Arissa⭐️

Why physio? My own injuries and success with physiotherapy over other treatments.

Favourite body part to treat? Backs and necks.

Most prescribed exercises? Core strengthening.

Memorable patient moment? Getting a patient back to work as a heavy equipment mechanic after 2 hernia surgeries. He had been unsuccessful with other PT’s, kinesiologists, and doctors, and had even completed an occupational rehabilitation program, with only worsening pain. We discovered that no one had taught him how to properly activate his core and he was doing the opposite movement instead, therefore putting more pressure on the repair site. We went back to basics, corrected some muscular imbalances, got him actually activating the right muscles and strengthened everything for his (finally) successful return to work.

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Amar⭐️

Why physio? I worked as a Kinesiologist for a couple years and found that I was able to help many of my clients more than any of their previous therapists were. This made me think about what more I could do and it lead me to the idea of looking into Physiotherapy school. I am glad I did because I am now in a profession where my abilities to help clients has only expanded.

Favourite body part to treat? Knees and ankles.

Most prescribed exercises? Cat-cow, Palof Press, planks.

Memorable patient moment? There are many memorable moments for me that come to mind. One of the more recent ones is when a client of mine came in and talked about the improvement we had made to date and the client came to tears because of the activities they are able to take part in, such as cooking meals for their family, with less discomfort and complications.

May is National Physiotherapy Month! Today’s feature physio is ⭐️Gulab⭐️

Why physio? I joined physiotherapy because I enjoy analyzing and solving problems and it included my love for sports and hands-on work.

Favourite body part to treat? The shoulder, because it lets me be creative.

Most prescribed exercises? Child’s pose for the lower back and different variations of shoulder retraction/rotator exercises.

Memorable patient moment? When my patient was able to complete their marathon, even though they had suffered multiple injuries along the way.
