Every year, the World Health Organization and its partners aim to increase awareness about viral hepatitis and the diseases it causes.

Hepatitis is a general term used to describe inflammation of the liver. There are six viruses that cause the different forms of viral hepatitis, which can lead to mild illness, or in some cases, serious liver damage.

Ask our pharmacist about how to prevent hepatitis with vaccination, and how to determine if you are up to date on your shots.

Summer is a time for picnic’s, street food festivals and indulging in some of your seasonal favourites! Take caution though, because during these warmer months, bacteria multiply faster and the chances of food poisoning increase.

If you think you may have eaten something questionable, and are now experiencing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, you may have a classic case of food poisoning. The good news is that for most people it will resolve within a few days without treatment.

If you are experiencing a case of food poisoning, talk to our pharmacist about oral replacement solutions with electrolytes to manage mild dehydration and other over-the-counter products to treat symptoms from diarrhea to upset stomach. Our pharmacist can also advise you on whether you may need to see a doctor.

A sting from a bee, wasp or hornet can cause a sharp pain that can continue for a few minutes, before fading to a dull ache. The area can be sore to the touch for days and the sting site may develop a red bump with a white ring around it.

Symptoms of a severe allergy to a bee sting, called anaphylaxis, can include difficulty breathing, a weak or rapid pulse, and skin reactions like hives, itching and flushing. This type of reaction requires immediate emergency care.

If you’ve ever had a serious reaction to a bee sting, but did not go to the hospital, talk to your doctor. They may refer you to an allergy specialist who can determine if you’re allergic and help you be prepared if you experience an allergic reaction again.

As many as 20 percent of Canadians are living with IBS, but not all know it yet because it can be tricky to diagnose. Ask our pharmacist if you should talk to your doctor about screening for IBS.

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest the sugar in milk products, and commonly includes symptoms such as upset stomach, bloating, gas and diarrhea. Although these symptoms can cause a lot of discomfort for some people, they can be managed through simple diet changes including:
• Eating dairy products with naturally lower levels of lactose like hard cheeses and yogurt.
• Opting for lactose-free milk and milk products.
• Trying small amounts of milk products with other foods, to see how your body reacts (like a bit of cream cheese on a bagel).

Ask our pharmacist for advice on managing your lactose intolerance and whether a lactase supplement can help.

Vaccines play an important role in keeping you and your family healthy, but you may be confused by misinformation you’ve read about immunization. For example:

Myth: Vaccines aren’t safe.
Fact: Health Canada regulates the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and ensures they go through a series of rigorous steps before they are approved for use. It can take 10 years to develop and approve a new vaccine, and public health authorities continue to monitor vaccines, even after they are in use.

A cramp happens when a muscle suddenly contracts and doesn’t relax. Toe cramps are usually harmless (often caused by dehydration or a mineral deficiency), but they can be painful.

Try these simple home remedies for toe cramps:

• When you’re exercising, drink water and replenish your electrolytes (with coconut water, milk, fruit, a veggie smoothie or a sports drink) if you are sweating heavily.
• Stretch your feet. Think toe raises, curls, flexing and pointing.
